Ferries are expensive, aren't they?

Is there any way of getting to France for less than £300???

with a car.

I had no idea it was so expensive! thought camping in France would be a cheap option.

£350 for the ferry?

Any suggestions?

All depends where you're planning on sailing to/from. We used to do a longer crossing i.e. Portsmouth-Caen, but found the expense prohibitive and found it much cheaper (and actually less tiring) to do Dover-Calais with a stop off in a hotel over night (Formula 1 or Etap about 30 euros per night sleeps 3 per room). We don't sleep well on the ferry so although lost a couple of hours drive wiht the longer crossing, we spent much more money to feel even more tired !
Much better now that we do shorter crossing, sleep well overnight and do slightly longer drive.
Day tickets might be an even cheaper option, buy two x returns and only use one half of each (not entirely certain this will work, sre someone will know better) DISCLAIMER * !!!!!

Try flying and then hiring a car? Only cheaper if you can get a 'no tax' deal for flight. Ryannair do these occasionally.

Where are you going? We are going to the Vendee and have decided to do either Dover-Calais or Dover-Dieppe with an overnight stop as suggested by Slushymummy. To do Portsmouth-St Malo was a ridiculous price for as you say a cheap holiday!

Must get round to booking the ferry after spending hours researching!
