Hello, we would love to go to Austria this summer, never been and not interested in skiing, hence the summer hol, but can anyone recommend a family resort, 2 adults and an 8 year old boy who is an excellent walker and we want to hire bikes also. Thanks in advance.

check out www.kinderhotels.co.uk

we went to a kinder hotel last year - was good and kids loved the range of sports ec on offer but it was very expensive and tbh I got a bit bored as it was all-inclusive and we had 3 meals a day in the hotel restaurant so didn't feel we could justify meals out elsewhere... We do speak German which was lucky as none of the activity sheets/menus were printed in English and the girls in the creche only spoke a bit of english if pushed - dd initially wanted to sign up for all the crafty activities but gave up as no-one spoke to her (she was the only English child). So all in all it was good (accommodation excellent, free bikes etc) but didn't deliver on everything it seemed to promise IYKWIM

Thanks for your replies, to be honest I always avoid all inclusive, we like to eat out somewhere different every night as part of the holiday, only really like unstuctured places without child clubs as son never wants to use them and prefers to be with us,so will keep looking, thank you anyway.

thirty where did you go? have booked this: www.seehotel-jaegerwirt.at for march...

we did brenseehof at fell-am-see, but think they are all quite similar?

St Anton is good for walking and cycling, also quite lively and has indoor pool etc if weather turns . Neighbouring Lech is quieter and more chic, easily reached for a day trip, as is Innsbruck. I'd suggest sticking to larger resorts such as Kitzbuehel or Zell am See where there is a variety of things to do rather than a village.

I agree with Deb. The Salzburg region is great for summer holidays and south east of Salzburg is wonderful. I don't know the hotel Deb posted but would recommend the, little known, Lungau region. You can google it and find loads of hotels / apartments etc. There's one hotel called Landhotel Postgut where some friends of ours have stayed.
Another wonderful place to visit is Millstat.

happy holiday hunting!

Zell am See is very pleasant, lots of lovely lakes to swim in. You can also (at your own risk) go walking on the Großglockner glacier. If you go to some of the smaller towns/villages, be prepared to speak German rather than English. We've camped at Woferlgut in Bruck and the people there are very friendly.

Gute Fahrt!

There's also a great thing here in the summer called the Salzburgerland card It's cheap to buy, children under 6 are free, you only pay for the 1st 2 children, so larger families get the greatest benefits. Then there are 190 activities, museums, cable cars, thermal baths etc to visit free of charge. It makes budgeting for your holiday really easy, and saves you loads of money too.

newname - I live in the place I linked to before

We went with Crystal Active a few years ago, there were quite a few families in the chalet we stayed in. We were in Kaprun, which is near Zell am See. There was a huge network of cycle paths, lovely hiking up to the glacier etc. We'd love to go back now we have kids as it seemed like a brilliant place to go if you're an active family.
