Every year I wonder about a holiday but mostly I decide not necessarily that we can't afford it but that I am not prepared to spend that amount of money on a holiday.

I don't do the Med in July/August anyway, it's far too hot and crowded for me.

LoveMyLapTop · 11/01/2009 23:06

Who can afford to spend that sort of money though?
£4 - 5k for a family holiday.
Dh and I are fairly well paid but that is way beyond our reach!

depends what kind of holiday you're after I suppose.
i've just booked a week in an apartment in spain for £450 for 4 of us.

yes, it'll be basic, but the children will enjoy the beach, and we can go on outings too.

i am totally not a spain-y, beach-y type person at all, but it's all we could afford and I need to get away lol

LoveMyLapTop · 11/01/2009 23:09

I dont want luxury
Near a beach/ pool
Near a decent restaurant
NO entertainment or such like
Def self catering!

how many in your family does it have to be a villa?

LoveMyLapTop · 11/01/2009 23:12

I kno 2k is ridiculous
those are the prices that are coming up when i search
Last year had 2 weeks in a tent for £1300 with keycamp
It was fab but would like a something a bit less dusty this year, more of a holiday for me!

Thought it might work out cheaper this year - be good offfers on. Nope!

So camping in Whitstable instead...ahhh well.

MumHadEnough · 11/01/2009 23:17

Well if you can find cheap flights to Dalaman, holidays don't come much cheaper than this 94p per night, for half decent but basic apartment in Marmaris.

It was 46p per night until yesterday btw!

thisisyesterday · 11/01/2009 23:19

fuerteventura? still just over a grand, but includes flights

thisisyesterday · 11/01/2009 23:20

i assume you're governed by school holidays?>

LoveMyLapTop · 11/01/2009 23:20

why do people always think "I deserve it"
your not entitled to a holiday
if you can't afford it
you can't afford it

JodieO · 11/01/2009 23:22

Last time I went away was years ago, before the kids were born. I've been away for a weekend here and there with them (handul of times) but nothing other than that.

JodieO · 11/01/2009 23:23

*handful

Also I won't fly.

PavlovtheCat · 11/01/2009 23:23

We are going away for a long weekend in a Yurt in Devon. BUT, we have been to USA twice last year (March and christmas) to visit family, which is our holiday so to speak, so we cannot complain.

We were talking just this weekend about how nice it would be to just go somewhere warm and chill out. But its not going to happen this year, probably not next year either. As long as we get to go away a couple of times this year, i do not mind if it not for a whole week or two, or not abroad. Just away from the usual grind is holiday enough for me.

LoveMyLapTop · 12/01/2009 07:51

whats the point in working so hard songbird
Not all of us want a tan out of a bottle!

What about mobile home rather than tent; much more comfortable (less dust/aircon/decking). Bit more expensive then tent, but cheaper than apartment or villa.

Thomson Al Fresco are good.

aznerak · 12/01/2009 08:07

Hi LoveMyLapTop

Not all villas are expensive! My parents rent out their villa in Sth of France - ultra child friendly and big enough to share with friends as 4 large bedrooms - last year we were there as 7 adults and 2 children.

The highest rates is £1450 per week so between 2 families that is only £1450 for the fortnight (each family paying 1 of the weeks). It is driveable (depending on where you are in the UK and how good you are at long drives) and serviced by 5 local airports, all taking budget airlines.

They offer Mumsnetters discounts too!

Have a look at their small ad here on mumsnet

good luck whatever you decide xx

lovemylaptop
this is what's up with most peoples spending habits and why so manay people are in such a mess with their finances, they think they are "entitled" to certain things.
