Anorak, my granny lives in Hythe & my Mum & Dad have got a holiday flat there on the seafront and so we spend quite a lot of time down there.

My nephew loves the "Rombley Hythe & Dymchurch" railway as he calls it, it's great for the little ones but grownups too!

You may not be able to do this with your kids, not sure how old they are, but hiring a rowing boat on the canal is also good for a laugh.

As far as pubs, restaurants etc go well they often change down there, if you want quite a traditional fair head to Sotirio's, it looks a bit stuffy but they are very child friendly at lunch times. It's a while since I went in any of the pubs, can't really say I'd recommend them. There used to be but don;t know if it's still there a Mexican restaurant in the high st, which was OK, for a cocktail & plate of nachos!

There is a nice pub at Elham if you are going out that way.

The shops are a funny mixture of things there are several antique shops muddling along with charity shops & other bits & bobs. A nice gifty / card shop, couple of book shops, etc.

There's Waitrose for food shopping, plus butchers etc on the high st.

Canterbury is a day trip away for better shopping.

Folkestone is good for a breeze along the seafront but it's a bit run down and Dover is sh**e (well last time I went) although Dover castle is good - they have activities for kids usually in the holidays & you can go in the underground tunnels to look at the 2ww stuff (I was a wimp & wouldn;t go!).

For days out, Leeds & Hever castles are also nearby, Hever has an amazing water maze that kept kids amused for hours (take a change of clothes if it's open!!!!).

Nearest sandy beach is Dymchurch.

Good stroll along the prom at Hythe tho watching the kite surfers!

Well hope you enjoy the week Anorak!!!

Anything else let me know & I will try to rack brains.

(rack? is that right sp?)

For posh pub food The Yew and Ewe at Brenzett. Huge fish portions, The Pilot at Dungeoness. Smarter fish, Hythe Bay Fish Bar. Nepalese food The Hungry Eye in the High Street.
Some people like miniature railway museum in New Romney - not been there myself. Other suggestions are Port Lympne Zoo, Burmarsh Donkey Sanctuary (not v exciting), Rare Breeds Centre on way to Tenterden, walks along Saxon Shore Line, contact The Green Gang (sorry no email to hand) for events for kids, Dover Castle, FOLKESTONE LOWER LEES PARK - FAB FAB PLAY PARK. I should be able to think of more - we're only a few miles away normally but in Sweden right now. Any queries on local pubs etc CAT me and I'll try to help. My kids really enjoy just walking on the beach collecting stones and shells. If you are self catering and like fish go to the fish market in Hythe Road.

Thank you vicdubya and swedishmum, as well as everyone else with their info. How on earth will we fit that all into one weekend? .

The pubs and restaurants recommendations are always very useful, and DS (aged 4) is mad about trains so will be riding the RH&D and perhaps visiting the museum too.

We'll be leaving here at 10ish this morning...will print this thread just before we go.

Just got back, had a lovely weekend and very lucky with the weather.

Enjoyed meeting Fio2 and Rickman on Friday and hope to see the two of you again sometime. If you are passing by where I live let me know. Or tell me when and I will meet you in London.

Yesterday went to the outlet centre and got my paper for my crafting - I know it's sad but I loved that paper mill shop. DH and DS went on the steam train while DD and I were shopping. In the evening we found a lovely child-friendly tapas bar in Hythe but unfortunately cannot recommend as it was its last night of business.

Today we took the kids to the beach for a walk and collecting shells, then the funfair and a pub lunch in Dymchurch, followed by an afternoon at Port Lympne zoo. Now have two very tired children home having their baths and tea.

Thanks for all your suggestions xxx.

Yes fio, that seems to happen whenever I go out with DS, I can't figure out what happens as I don't remember dropping all my food and crayons all over the floor.

Glad you had a good weekend. As you sit and make cards using all you new suplies, you can think of all the good times you had!

Paper Mills are great for your basic cardstock aren't they! How much did you buy?

anorak · 04/04/2005 12:00

Dingle, what a disappointment not to meet you and bore the tits off the others talking about cutting and sticking .

I was very good, I only bought 1 box of A4 cos I knew if I used it all up I'd have plenty of money in my little bank account to go and buy some more.

My sister asked me to get her a few bits so I used the pleasure vicariously to help me over the cravings

Have spent the morning so far with scissors, glue and sizzix machine - I'm like a kid in a sweetshop.
