Luxury Family Hotels with Self Catering Appt options? Spanish or Greek Islands

Looking for suggestions for this summer. We like the look of Porto Sani Halkidiki here, but I can't see that they do the appartment type of thing we are looking for.

We ideally want somewhere with the facilities of a hotel, but with the flexibility of a kitchen and separate rooms for the kids and hopefully my mum too!

Apologies - this thread is probably done to death every year

we're off to poro sani this summer and have been given free hb
dunno if that chages things for you?

geegees · 24/01/2009 13:55

James villa's now do villa resorts, too expensive for us in school holidays though. Try googling luxury villa resorts or luxury self catering resorts that should bring up some options. Good luck.

Am bumping this - does anyone have any more suggestions as I#m looking for something similar too! Thank you!

Sycamoretree · 29/01/2009 13:58

oneplusone - we've ended up booking this place....got lots of good reviews, and another mnetter gave it the thumbs up (so it must be great!). hotel

That looks gorgeous sycamoretree. How old are your DC's? Mine are 5 and nearly 3. I was looking for an apartment with a little kitchenette as DS is a very fussy eater and i would probably need to make a few meals for him.

Ruthiebabes · 29/01/2009 14:17

We usually book a 2 bed apt on a small complex, which can be hard to find. It is so much more of a holiday when kids are in a separate bedroom.

We had a great hol at Vilabranca Apts in Lagos, Algarve. It is a complex, not big, but has too pools and a bar and restaurant. We booked the apartment independently on holidaylettings.co.uk and the flights with easyjet. It worked out very reasonable. It gets good reviews on tripadvisor which made us feel happy to book it.

oneplusone · 29/01/2009 14:22

ruthie, that's exactly what i want. A nice/luxury 2 bed apartment with a kitchen in a complex but a small one, near a beach, restaurants cafes etc and not teeming with lager louts etc.

Sycamoretree · 29/01/2009 14:35

Hi oneplusone - DC's are 3.5 and almost 18 months - will be almost 4 and almost 2 when we go. We have booked the two bed family room - apparently the kitchenette is small but has a microwave and fridge. My expert google research has revealed that they don't actually provide any plates or cups or cutlery though (because they presumably want you to eat at the hotel) so I am feel smug as will be very much prepared with sand English person abroad levels of travel kettle etc!

We managed to book just before school hols start as DD only in nursery...

oneplusone - you should check out that travel company for other ideas that might be more suitable for you. If you give them your budget and what you're after they will make some suggestions via email...

Also, it was less than half the price of Porto Sani - though I am very at Ronhaldinio - what a great deal! Who did you go through, or did the hotel offer you that directly?

We did get some good discount for booking by end of Jan, booking online (having done all the chat over the phone!)and we also got a free child place.

We're about to book an apartment in Portugal, an hour north of Lisbon. It's actually part of a golf resort; we're not golfers but all the apartments in the resort seem to be furnished to a really high/luxury standard, it's quieter than the Algarve, there's a 5* hotel nearby with all associated facilities including kid's club. In short, it's just what i was looking for!

And it's not bad value, it'll come to around £1500 for the 4 of us for 10 days in August, including flights and accommodation.

Sycamoretree · 30/01/2009 20:41

Wow - sounds great. Enjoy!!!

I have to say we never stay in a hotel if we can avoid it. Much more relaxing, and usually cheaper, to stay in a spacious appartment and have the option to self cater as well as much more room for DS to run around.

We stayed at the La Manga resort in Costa Calida in October in a huge 2 bed roomed appartment in the "Los Olivos" bit. Loads of room but within walking distance of around 8 different restaurants. It wasn't hugely warm when we were there so would recommend one of the areas with outdoor heated pool. They offer tennis, golf and football coaching for adults and children, plus have a very expensive but good kids club. There is a nice spa and the actual hotel is nice for drinks and food as well. It is expensive and we went when Euro was at 1.30 but all very high quality.

Check out James villas if you want to work out an all in price.

rheasmummy · 30/01/2009 23:32

Sycamoretree- Can you tell me how you got a free child place with Sovereign for Princess Yaiza? I have been wanting to book this hotel for late June/early July but the prices have been so high. The website is not showing free child places. We would also like a two bedroomed family room....possibly half board not sure yet. I love the look of this hotel too!

Sycamoretree · 31/01/2009 08:51

Hi Rheasmummy - it may be that they have run out - we booked about 2 weeks ago, maybe more? You should just called them and get a quote for your dates and see if they are including a free child place in the quote they give you. If so, then go ahead and book it online as you get a further 5% if you book online rather than with a telephone agent, even though you can get all the info you need over the phone first....

You can then amend or add comments to your booking by emailing their customer services.

We got easyjet flights too, and paid for speedy boarding, which brought the price right down.

I have to say, we looked at half board and it cost a fortune...I think we'll be making a lot of use of the kitchenette (see my post about taking own kettle and plates etc!) and using the local restaurants which are apparently very close by and plentiful.

Any more questions, ask away - there is nothing I have not researched about this hotel!!!!

Ooh - I'm back to fantasy holiday planning with this thread. DC 3 is due next month so DH isn't keen on booking anywhere but maybe for Oct half term....

gladders · 02/02/2009 14:56

is the free child p[lace not for the under 2?

princesa yaiza is fab though! we went last year and I looked at all the travel agent recommendations in the Canaries and not one of them had the same facilities in the same location for the same price....

I hear the comments about self catering and hotels, but with this one, you just do B&B.... and then there's a kitchenette (inc microwave, proper fridge and separate sink to wash dishes) where you can store and prepare your own food.... small minimarket over the road and lots of restauarants close by (including just above the lovely sandy beach....)

heaven.

gladders · 02/02/2009 14:58

incidenatally, we have been to sani as well (on an October cheapy) - and the room was a suite with a kitchenette as well (hobs, sink, fridge) - but not as spacious as the yaiza.
