Call me stupid, but I can't figure out what I should do regarding a carseat for DS...

Do taxi's carry carseats? Should we take one? Help!!!

(Think I might be a little confused )

Are you planning to travel much by car when you're there. We went last year and travelled on foot everywhere except to the mountains. To and from airport I would be happy carrying on my knee.

ten10 · 07/01/2009 19:38

If you book a taxi transfer from the airport in advance then you will be able to also book a carseat,

Wonderstuff · 07/01/2009 19:39

Taxis in Morocco won't have carseats no. They don't have seatbelts iirc carry 4 passengers in the back and 2 in the front. If just to hotel from airport I would have dc on lap tbh. How old is ds?

Wonderstuff · 07/01/2009 19:41

May have changed though was many years ago I went to Marrakech

monkeybumsmum · 07/01/2009 19:48

Thank you all!

DS will turn 2 whilst we are there Wonderstuff. I just worry so much about putting him on my knee in case we have a crash. I would never forgive myself.

Wobblypig how did you get to the mountains? Any tips on how to get there/where exactly to go? Did you enjoy Marrakech?

ten10 - have thought about booking a transfer, but is so much more expensive - about 4 times the price a taxi would be when I rang the hotel earlier...

I think we'll take our foldable carseat with us - it's a pain to travle with, but then at least we'll have one with us!

Thanks for all your advice!

IME Moroccan taxis plan to seat 4 in the back and 2 passengers in the front next to the driver so carseat difficult, as someone already mentioned. Pretty squashed.

In order to get the room you are used to, you say, I'm paying for so many seats. That way, you get the room you want, ie for myself and a child I would pay for 3 seats so we could sit normally. Can't remember ever having had/used a carseat in those taxis tbh at all (pre-dc days). You would need to take your carseat but I am not convinced there will be a seatbelt to use to secure him in the carseat.

I would probably sit him on my knee, understand your reservations though.

You can book a whole taxi, I sometimes did that for excursions and I can't remember how much it was but not exorbitant IIRC and then of course you wouldn't have a problem strapping in your carseat. Presume that is what you mean but you do need to specify you want the whole taxi and not just 2 seats in it IYSWIM

Depends on the taxi. There are small taxis that take 3 and big ones that take 4. The seatbelts were there in some, but not in most. I would personally not bother taking a car seat as it might not fit, there might not be seatbelts and I think your DC would be more comfortable and safe on your lap.

Really really long post sorry - Was in Marrakech recently. There are 'big' taxis which go when they are full. They are kinf od like mini buses. We had a sheep in ours with us. Then there are 'small' taxis which are more like taxi taxis. Driving in Morocco is crazy. Imagine Paris but 100 times worse. I would not bother with a car seat. If there are seatbelts they are useless anyway.
Go to the Hammams. I have never been so relaxed or clean in my life. Do a trip out to the waterfalls. They are amazing. Also dont eat every night at the food stalls in the middle of the square. We found a fab cafe which caters to the locals. Its on the outside of the square. Has white plastic tables and a chicken roisserie thingy visible. Food was wonderful and really cheap. Drink lots of the OJ. Eat tagines. Try snail soup and a sheeps head and buy lots!! The mountains are FREEZING!!!!! The desert is wondeful. Especially sleeping out there are night. Go to Essaouria. 3 hours by bus fro Marakech. Huge beach, no waves, kid friendly, lots of cafes and hotels and fresh seafood by the docks.

Really wouldn't bother taking a carseat tbh, as a lot of the time there won't be a working seatbelt to secure it.

We took our toddlers on our knees in both types of taxi.

Thank you guys! Am now unsure as to what to do! Will discuss with dh as to whether we should take the carseat or not - if we're unlikely to be able to use it then there's no point really is there. It'd be a right pain lugging it around for nothing.

AussieLou What a star! Thank you for all the info, it's very gratefully received . I shall write it all down and take it with us. I'm already so excited, and you've just made me more so! LOL re sharing your taxi with a sheep . That must've been funny! Oy my god re 100 times worse than Paris, that's bad enough as it is! Am thinking its probably a bit like India driving wise, with seemingly no rules/regulations, and as long as you don't run over the cows then you're laughing

If anyone else has any more tips/advice then that would be fab, thanks!
