Ireland suggestion

We're going to Northern Ireland in April for a short break with family.

Does anyone have any suggestions for family activities near Enneskilliin, and also Dublin, as we may have a day out there too.

Or is there somewhere between Enneskillin and Dublin that's worth a visit?

Thanks

The Ulster American Folk Park is near Omagh. Haven't been there for years but I think it's pretty good.

Dublin is a long way from Enniskillen.

There are lots of good places in Belfast. The W5 science museum is great.

The science museum looks great, thanks. The Folk Museum is fab; we visited there last year.

Do you think Dublin is too far? Is there anything in the South, (But not too far) that is worth a visit?

I'd definately recommend W5 in Belfast too. Its the absolute bees knees
Takes at least half a day to do it, in fact we could probably have spent much much longer!

roisin · 30/12/2008 21:24

It depends on what sort of things you like.

We went to Newgrange again this summer. The boys are 9 and 11 and were completely bowled over by the site: the visitor's centre is fantastic.

You can't book though, and it can be very busy, so you can easily end up spending most of an entire day there.

That sounds great. My dd's are 8 & 10. I think they would like that.

The road from Belfast to Dublin is pretty fast (by Ireland standards).

Rolacola · 31/12/2008 12:15

How long would it take do you think?

How long from Enneskillin to Newgrange?

That would help if I knew where Enniskillen was! I know we drove through it last summer, but ...

roisin · 31/12/2008 12:21

Oh, just looked on Googlemaps. That is a long way. We drove out that way from Belfast heading West and were shocked how long it took to get that far.

I don't know what the road is like heading south-east from Enniskillen towards Dublin.

Do you have a Satnav? In the UK we usually find the Satnav timings to be over-generous. In Ireland we usually took slightly longer than the Satnav timings.

Hope someone will be along shortly who knows Ireland well.

Thanks Roisin for your help.

Anyone here knowledgeable about Ireland?

Well, Multimap says that Enniskillen is over 100 miles from Dublin and about 80 miles from Belfast!

LadyMuck · 01/01/2009 18:51

It takes us about an hour and 3/4 to drive from East Belfast to Enniskillen.

The Marble Arch Caves are a few miles south of Enniskillen. There is a Castle though not much of one from memory. We often hang out at the leisure centre when we are there.

I would allow about 3 hours to get from Ennikillen to Dublin via a direct route, more if you were going via Belfast.

Would also recommend W5 in Belfast! Also transport museum and zoo.

LadyMuck · 01/01/2009 18:54

The other thing to watch out for in term of going south of the border is that with the current exchange rate it is likely to seem very expensive!

Metella · 01/01/2009 19:38

Oh yes, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum is excellent. But you really need more than one day to see it all.

Actually, the lakes in Fermanagh are really beautiful although it is aeons since I was there.

Great suggestions. Thanks
