Australia vs NZ.

MY dp were planning to go to Kenya for a safari, but we're considering keeping that as a treat for when dp finishes his phd.

Now he's suggested Australia or New Zealand. Which would you recommend?

Australia has never really appealed to me, neither has NZ but if I have to choose between the two I'd rather go to NZ I think.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has been to either country, and what they thought of it.

That should be my dp and I.

It all depends on what you like doing on holiday. Do you like culture, beaches, wildlife, city, wilderness, activities, camping, luxury or what? All these are on offer but where you go exactly depends on your preferences.

Astrophe · 28/12/2008 05:47

how old are your DC?

ghosty · 28/12/2008 06:32

Yes, FleurDelacour is right ... it depends on what you like to do ...
I love both countries but so far haven't seen enough of Australia to comment on it as a holiday destination although I do live here.
Melbourne, Victoria, (where I live) is a fantastic city ... people love to visit Melbourne. It's not huge (not as big as Sydney) but has oodles of culture and arts and great architecture and parks etc etc. Loads to do here. We are on summer hols atm and honestly, if I wanted to find something 'to do' for every day of the 6 weeks I could. Great scenery down the coast when you leave the city, great places to visit (12 apostles etc, Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island)
I have only been to Sydney twice, love the city for a city break ... feels very fab and exotic drinking champagne in front of the Opera House etc, great shopping.
I don't know much about NSW at all and Eids and Suzy Wong could help you with Queensland and Western Australia.
I would not, if you paid me, go camping in Australia - but I am a big baby re. creepy crawlies.
NZ is where my heart is and it is a fab holiday destination if you are prepared to accept any kind of weather at any time of year and love NZ for its scenery no matter what.
Camper van through NZ is something near the top of my "Wish I could do" list. NZ is a great camping destination but doesn't have any exotic wildlife really, that isn't nocturnal or extinct.
Auckland is the biggest city but, although I loved living there, is not somewhere you would want to spend many days on holiday.
There aren't any big resort style holiday places in NZ ... not like the sunshine coast in Australia so if you are after that, look at Queensland.
The top of the North Island of NZ is quite one of the most beautiful places on earth. As are the Southern Alps on the South Island ... South Island gets v cold though.

I spent two and a half months on holiday in Oz - not sure why we were bothering before i went but soon changed my mind- it was the most fantastic place for a holiday - scenery, animals, barier reef, were amazing - can you tell i liked the scenery. if you are an outdoors person, which i am assuming you are if you are off to kenya at some point i think you would love oz.

nz also wonderful, only spent 5 weeks (in campervans- very recommended) there but an hoping to go and live there, very very beautiful and plent to see.

FleurDelacour · 28/12/2008 08:58

No exotic wildlife in NZ? Well ok it isn't OZ or Borneo but we are off to South Island in a few weeks and are hoping to see penguins, whales and dolphins. I have been camping (in swags no less) in Australia. Sleeping under the Southern Cross beside a camp fire was awesome.

ghosty · 28/12/2008 09:17

Well, when i say no exotic wildlife I mean no Dangerous Animals that want to kill you or eat you
The whale watching in the South Island is amazing, Fleur, have a great time

Thunderduck · 28/12/2008 12:49

No children at present, just the two of us.

inscotland · 28/12/2008 13:02

We love Western Australia. It has it all! Wildlife, scenery, loads and loads of very good wine tasting regions, beaches, countryside, shopping, eating etc.

We also like Sydney but not keen on Melbourne and Brisbane. Cairns is lovely but only if you get a smaller tour operator to take you to the barrier reef. Way too commercialised with one of the big operators.

What do you like to do on holiday?

Bubbaluv · 28/12/2008 13:05

Time of year will also be an important factor. When would you be going?

Thunderduck · 28/12/2008 13:11

Probably late August/Early September.

We're not beach people. We like to see the sights, go for walks and see the wildlife.

I'm not very good with heat, though becoming a little more tolerant of it in my old age.

Thunderduck · 28/12/2008 13:12

Camping is out, unless it's the big luxury tents they have when you go on safari, complete with a real bed.

Dp loves camping. I'd rather be taken out and shot than do that again.

WhatSheSaid · 28/12/2008 23:08

Just to let you know, it will prob still be fairly cold in most bits of NZ in late Aug/early Sep. Not during the day so much but nights/mornings. Average night temps in Aug range from about 1 - 8 degrees. Daytime temps about 11-14 degrees. Weather in spring hard to predict - could be fair bit of rain (but equally may get sunny days)

Thunderduck · 28/12/2008 23:35

Cold and rain sounds lovely actually.I'm not at all good with the heat.

ghosty · 29/12/2008 23:18

The more I think about it Thunderduck, the more I think NZ may be a better bet for you.
Even in Melbourne the heat can be unbearable. Like I said before, it doesn't last long but it is oppressive and unpleasant when it is here. We don't have air conditioning in our rented house and I dream of air con for the summer.
NZ's (North Island, Auckland) summers never reach much over 28 degrees and the winters are mild too.
The South Island is more like Britain with the beautiful seasons and colder winters.
If you like walking and scenery then I would strongly recommend the Mountain and Lakes areas (Otago) on the South Island ... absolutely stunning and breathtaking.
My friend has a holiday home here. It is near this place and has to be one of the most beautiful areas in the world. I have never breathed air so clean.

Go NZ!

Reasonable travelling distances, fantastic accessible scenery, great beaches, both cove-like and miles of golden sand-like, proper little towns, a UK style B&B culture, variety at every turn, a living indigenous culture.

Note the comments re weather, though! Invercargill in mid winter is like Shetland! When the wind comes from the south there ain't nothin' between you and Antarctica!

Oz: Well, vast distances are the real bugbear! You really do have to fly between the bigger cities. The Barrier Reef IS worth a look-see and is the rainforest but far north Queensland (FNQ as it's known) is either very rugged or very touristy. Melbourne in winter, especially in an older, traditional house can be blardy cold, what with wooden walls and no heating! Sydney is a fun, vibrant city but you could 'do' the sights in 2-3 days. Brisbane really isn't a fun tourist destination, you'd need to go a fair way north to get to where the tourist magnet stuff is.

I've spent months in NZ before both as a penniless backpacker and rather more cashed up. I've enjoyed every trip there and would willingly go back (though perhaps not to live!). I lived in Oz for 15 years, again as a backpacker, when I did The Grand Tour, and as a local, in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast, near Noosa.

So my feeling is as a one-off destination, I'd go to NZ and get a hire car. Don't try and do everything- if you have a fortnight, I'd do one island only (north), 3-4 weeks, both in a figure of 8.

ghosty · 01/01/2009 03:01

The problem with living in NZ (if you are a Brit) is it is sooo far away. You can't get any further without being on the way home again.
When we moved to Australia I felt we had moved back into civilisation as I know it due to shops like French Connection, funnily enough.

ghosty · 01/01/2009 03:02

Oops, I am confusing my Aus vs NZ threads. This is the holiday one, not the 'which one should we move to one'
