Things to do in Salisbury

I live in Dorset and dd's best friend is moving away to near Basingstoke. We have worked out that Salisbury is exactly half way between the two, so plan to meet up regularly.

Has anyone who lives there got good ideas what two 2-year olds could do in Salisbury? Preferably not expensive. Are there child-friendly places with lots of space to run around where we could have lunch? Are there soft play places? Public swimming pools with good child facilities? Free things to do?

Any ideas gratefully received!

I grew up in Salisbury. Most child friendly thing to do is wait for summer and take a picnic and sit on the grass in the Cathedral Close. Can run about till heart's content there. There's a lovely restaurant in (I think) Crane Street called the Lemon Tree. You can sit in the garden as well and it is very child friendly (can't remember if there is a kiddie's menu though).

The Arts Centre is really cool, good grub and always something interesting going on. Plus it is in a really nice part of town (near Salt Lane) and in an old church so again with the running around outside.

The market on Saturdays and Tuesdays is "free" and kids love that sort of thing (mine does anyway).

Wilton House (about 3 miles out) has a fabulous adventure playground and a nice cafe.

Wilton House playground is great but shut until Easter

The leisure centre has a pool now? When did that happen? What happened to the old pool near the Arts Centre?

Honestly, I remember when all this was fields.....

No help, but I keep reading this as "things to do in Sainsburys"

georgimama · 16/12/2008 11:40

There is a Sainsbury's in Salisbury. And a Waitrose.

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 16/12/2008 13:34

Have no idea when pool near arts centre shut and I have lived here for 7 years! Likewise with the leisure centre.

kiddiz · 16/12/2008 13:55

Me too ComeOVeneer I was wondering what else you would want to do in Sainsburys other than shop!!

georgimama · 16/12/2008 14:04

The leisure centre (on Ashley Road?) was built in about 1993. Didn't have a pool then. I left in 1997 so it obviously all changed sometime between then and when you came!

reindeersnake · 16/12/2008 16:20

Great ideas! I shall make notes. No wonder no one answered 'things to do in Sainsburys'. Although that could be an interesting thread in its own right?
