So, we are flying to South Africa this weekend and I need all the advice I can get. I have done my best to request a basinet but as my ds is pretty big for his age and guessing he may be too big and therefore unable to sleep in it! I also wondering if anybody has used something such as medised before the flight or even anything else that may help him settle to sleep.
On a practical note, as he his drinking cows milk now, will I be able to get fresh milk on plane or should I resort to the follow on carton milk made especiallly for babies??
He usually has a large breakfast and the jarred foods just dont fill him up, does anyone know of any other alternatives......in other words all travelling tips that anyone has to offer will be hugely appreciated
thank you

Who are you flying with?

BA have great suspended seats like a sling rather than bassinets which are useful as a bassinet was too small for our dd1 when she was 1.

We found that she slept through the night easily on the flight and didn't need medised..be aware some people have not such good results from it..but often the engine sound seems to have them off and its dark etc.

If he doesn't fit in the bassinet ask the staff if you can have some seats together to sleep. We were upgraded into business so that dd1 could sleep on me once.

They have milk.

Bring some cereal, ask for heated milk and toast and fruit! All quite possible and they are normally happy to help.

Have a lovely time

We are flying with BA! Thank you for all that advice, I will ask about the sling! Great that I dont have to worry about the milk and breakfast issue! Will start looking forward to the holiday now as opposed to dreading the flight!

How lucky - sounds lke a lovely holiday -
I did the folowing for DS when we flew and he was 10months old -

  1. Put dry cereal in a tupperware and just got the milk at breakfast.
  2. pack teething powders - can recommend Ashton and Parsons - they are brilliant.
  3. It will most likely be late-ish by the time you fly so your LO will probably be aseep before take off!
  4. Take some water in a bottle as the sucking will help with ear pressure for takeoff and landing
5.DS was too big for the basinette so we got a sort of a rocky chair that attaches with seatbelts and he slept in that. If you do have a basinette, put a blanket on the bottom as they are very hard -
  1. Pack some snacks and things in case LO gets peckish at some point, although they do have fruit on board.
  2. Skip the Medised unless you really feel it will help - you might just end up with a cranky, exhausted LO on a suger high from the medication who can't sleep!!

we are flying to aus via HK on friday with our 18mth old and 8 year old
have done long haul a few times with ds1
the medised is to be avoided as it can suppress their breathing and as the cabin has slightly lower oxygen levels I personally wouldn't give it especially in an under 2
we just try to stick to the normal routine as much as poss
put them in pjs and sleeping bag bedtime milk and stories etc
mine slept well on all the overnight flights we have done
take your own snacks in case they need feeding outside of meal service times
have a lovely time
