I need to do a letter giving DH permission to travel with DS - is there a form letter somewhere?

Something that will cover all eventualities and save me from having to compose it myself (feeling very lazy tonight).

Thanks.

Oh, I used to do these. Um.

X has my permission to take Y on international travel from X date to Y date.

Thing is, unless it's notarised, I don't think it's really worth anything. I think only Canada cares about this letter anyway. (yes, they really ask for it)

Make sure that all names on letters are adsolutely identical with names on passports and all travel documents. Any discrepancies will cause problems. This is because of incidences of parents taking children abroad without consent of other parent.

They do ask for these letters, I have had to produce them when travelling with my nephews and nieces.

I doubt they will ask, but just in case. I must make sure that he takes a copy of the adoption cert too as DS is still travelling on his old passport before his name change.

Will this do?

To whom it may concern

I give my husband, [full name of DH], my full permission to travel with our son, [DS name on passport], (also known as [DS name on adoption cert]) without my presence.

This permission is for 12 months from the date of this letter and is without restriction on destination.

Yours faithfully

Bran

Or do you think it would be better to make it specific to this trip with dates and destination?

Here's a sample one for you, idler

Hope they enjoy their trip.

The State Department travel pages also list travel document requirements country by country.

Ooh, that's detailed snigger. I would prefer not to have to do all the passport numbers, because DH generally leaves and enters the UK with his Irish passport but leaves and enters Malaysia with his Malaysian passport. If the Malaysian authorities became aware that he had a foreign passport they would revoke his citizenship (and possibly prosecute him). Also I would have to go and dig out the passports and copy out the details (did I mention I'm feeling lazy?).

this one's easier on the eye but you'll have to type in your email address and confirm via link

snigger · 04/12/2008 22:50

Will you manage that without the aid of Lucozade ?

bran · 04/12/2008 22:52

Thank you. Have we ever met snigger? I feel you have a deep understanding of my character. (Could you lay out my nightgown, turn down the bed and put toothpaste on my toothbrush now please.)

I can't be bothered to start a new thread, but can I just whinge that
DH is out at his office party;
he said he would be home by 9pm (ok, so I never really believed that);
the taxi is coming to pick them up at 6.30am tomorrow;
DH hasn't packed yet (I've packed for DS so he'll be fine);
I fear we will all be up at 5am tomorrow running around like blue-arsed flies trying to sort out the things that he's forgotten.

And also, against my advice, DH booked on Gulf Air (for complicated reasons that seemed valid at the time) instead of a good one like Malaysian or Singapore. According to my SIL, who flew Gulf a fortnight ago, the service was terrible, the food was worse and quite a few of the seat-back thingies weren't working. I'm so glad I'm not going. [smug, but slightly worried, emoticon]

Bran, that almost makes me want to do the toothbrush thing, and lob in a hot water bottle for good measure! How long are they gone for?

bran · 04/12/2008 23:21

They're away for 10 days - DH has just come home so he is crashing around sorting stuff out and I am wrapping presents. I expect I'll get to sleep at some stage.

snigger · 05/12/2008 09:18

Was there sleep, or did you just push through till 5?

bran · 05/12/2008 10:55

There was sleep, I went to bed after midnight and DH came to bed just before 1am. Then we had a lie-in until 5.30am. It'll be an early night for me tonight I think, and then 10 lie-ins until they come home. Better than I had expected really. I haven't heard anything from them since so I assume they got away OK.
