I am going to new york over christmas, havnt been for ages, and trying to think of things i would really like to do over this time (and saving my christmas present to be bought there!) This time i will have my dh & dd (18 months) with me, staying with my friend, so accom all sorted, but need a few baby friendly/toddler suggestions.
Just trying to think of some things to do, and wondering what everyone's best bits are!
all advice greatly appreciated!

I'm watching with interest

My favourite things to do there are visit the great art galleries and museums, take a walk in Central Park, go out for breakfast, eat a deli sandwich, take a trip on the Staten Island ferry, just walk around looking at the amazing buildings. All of those should be doable with a toddler...

Excellent - a watcher at least!

I was thinking of the Brooklyn Childrens museum (havnt been there); as well as Guggenheim, trip round central park, but have no idea on child friendly restuarants (causual coffee style places to rest, or respite from cold!)

Whereabouts are you staying? You obv don't want to trek for miles for breakfast, etc...

krugerparkrules · 02/12/2008 10:50

We will be staying in brooklyn with my friend - and planning on doing a few things in the city .... just dont know any places where to take dd - used to go to new york in my youth and single days, so all the knowledge of those restuarants and clubs and places of no use now! My friend doesnt have children, and i thought it might be useful to have some names of suitable places ....

still trying to decide on my shopping list!

jeans, aveda shampoo on list at moment!

We went to the Bronx Zoo last time

FAO Schwarz might be worth a look too

SatsumaMoon · 02/12/2008 10:59

The bigs ToysRus at Times Square is good too...

Don't know Brooklyn at all I'm afraid (though it is on my list of places to visit next time as my Grandfather used to live there).

Ime most neighbourhoods have local diner/bakery sort of places that do breakfast.

I always buy DKNY underwear when I'm there!

Best free thing is the Staten Island Ferry which goes near the Statue of Liberty.

To be honest, with an 18 month old, most of the museums and child-friendly attractions are going to be too old for her. NYC is really a great city for tracking about with a little one, though. I don't think you'll have any problems. I'd do lots of walking, sightseeing and eating out and just take her along for the wonderful ride . Palm her off on DH for a few hours when you want to do some serious shopping, though! If she is allowed sweet treats, the Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is really funky and does all sorts of amazing ice cream flavours. The Lewis Caroll statues in mid Central Park (The Jabberwocky, Alice in Wpnderland characters etc) are cute and popular with tourists and kids. There is an Alice in Wonderland themed tea shop somewhere in Manhattan, too, I'm pretty sure. If it's cold (which it will be, I'm sure!), the natural History Museum has some exhibits that she might like. It's full of kids, anyhow, so you will feel right at home

Have fun. Very jealous!

Oh, and what sort of thing do you want to buy?

Get the discount cards for tourists if you visit Macy's or Bloomingdales.

I buy Origins and Bliss products in the US as vastly cheaper (although check they still are, with the exchange rate so poor at the minute...)

Any American branded stuff - Gap, Levi, Nike, American Eagle/American Apparel, Abercrombie etc. Oh, and the massive H&M on 5th Ave is cheap as chips.

krugerparkrules · 02/12/2008 13:01

whats a discout card wotsthatskippy! Was thinking of doing a macy's or bloomingdales visit ....

definately doing a pair of jeans - maybe some levi's - remind me of my youth!!!!

The Macys discount card is a red credit card sized piece of paper card which will give you 11% of many items that you buy. The discount is taken at the till.

You will need to go to their Customer Services department to obtain one of these. You will also need to show them some photo identification like your UK driving licence (if this is a card based one; NOT a paper based one) or your passport. You will not receive one of these without presenting any ID.

Do inform your credit card company before you travel that you will be in NYC otherwise they may stop your card!.

oooh that sounds good, thanks Attila
