OK...Woolies and MFI calling in the administrators is a bit shocking and if it has happened to those big names t feels as though it could happen to anyone. So I want to be sure that I am protected against losing my money when I book my holiday.

Anyone know what protection I would have if I didn't take travel insurance?
Would I have more protection if I do take travel insurance?

You need to ensure the agent and tour oeprator/airline are ABTA and ATOL bonded as that offers a guarnatee of moeny back and repatriation. afaik travel insurance is a back up to that scheme. If you or an agent book elements such as flight, transfer and accommodation separately, as opposed to a package deal, you would not be covered under ATOL's scheme for the other costs should the airline fail. Those you would try to claim under insurance.

I perhaps should have explained further...it is just a UK holiday - to teh Haven sites.

I never buy their cancellation policy (which I think woudl cover this) as I pay all/most of it with Tesco clubcard vouchers - which wouoldn't be refundable by them. If I want to cover the value of my clubcard vouchers I would have to take Tesco travel insurance. Not a problem. I am just trying to work out whether I would be covered without it. And I guess (more importantly) whetther I would be covered with it.
