Travelling with a 7mth Questions

Hi
We are thinking of visiting friends in Spain in Feb/ March when for 4/5 days. DD will be about 7mths old.

DD is our first so have no ideas about travelling with a bubba.

What happens about feeding? DD is ff. Can you take cartons? Im guessing that would be easiest?

Buggys?- Do you need to check them in? Im thinking of just buying a cheap umberella stroller to use whilst away. Or would it be easier to just use our carrier/sling (supposing she still fits in it!)

Car seats? - Should I ask my friends if they could borrow one from someone to put in their car for trips out?
What about travelling to the airport?
Im guessing I wouldnt be able to take the car seat on the plane?

Sorry to sound so clueless!

Any advice/experiences would be great!

Remember to pack cartons - don't take as hand luggage as they are over the 100ml thing and they will make you open them to taste. If you need food for the journey take bottle with water and powder to make up, or milk made up already, you can take more than 100ml in a bottle will just have to taste it.

You can take made up bottle over 100ml, but they will may you taste it. Have travelled several times with DD and never been a problem taking a couple of 200ml bottles plus juice cup.

Buggy - you can check it into the hold but it's easier to keep with you and hand over at the plane door. They'll pu it in the hold for you. Some places bring it to the door when you land and some bring it out with the luggage.

Not sure about car seats. Your friend may know though. I do know that we hired one with our hire car on hliday this year, so this may be an option.

Don't worry too much. I first travelled with DD at 15months and it was just the two of us as DH had to work - it was fine, a lot easier than I thought it'd be.

Take lots of snacks, such a bananas if DD is on finger food and a favourite cuddly toy. A dummy or bottle is good to suck on during take off and landing as it helps equalise the pressure in the ears.

I've found airline staff to be pretty helpful and when DH and I flew with DD at 18months the airstewedesses gave us three seats even though we'd only paid for two, so that we'd have room for DD to play/sleep.

Hope this helps a little.

We took our dd on a plane when she was 8mo and this was our experience:

we took empty bottles, and cartons of formula on the plane. They were totally fine about it but made us open one of the cartons (we tasted it and poured it into one of the bottles and then fed it to dd). Other people I know have successfully taken bottles of water with powdered formula, but we felt funny about taking a white powder through customs!

We also took jars of food, and again they made us open one and taste it (which was our first introduction to how rank jars of food are, so we never did feed them to dd!)

You have to check in your buggy but you can take it right up to the gate, so you have it the whole time in the departures lounge. They then put it in the hold at the last minute, so it comes out on the carousel, or with 'outsize' luggage the other end (so you have to carry child from plane to baggage collection).

Friends of mine have taken carseats on the plane, but I don't know what airline that was. Some planes have skycots too.

My parents drove us to the airport and picked us up, so they kept our carseat for the week, and we borrowed one from the friends we were staying with abroad. No matter how lax the rules are where you're staying, I would still put my child in a carseat.

Not to worry you, more to warn you, we found that as dd was crawling she was a bit of a nightmare on the plane. Had she been walking it would have been fine, but she was down at ankle level and kept disappearing under the seats, so dh was dashing down the aisle, through the loos, and up the other side to catch her as she came out! So if there's any toy that holds your dc's attention, take it with you!!!

The only problem we had was that DD was milk intollerant so I took a couple of soya yoghurts in my hand luggage for on the plane. They were 125ml each and I had to throw them away at security as they were not technically baby food. Other than that it was fine.

Certainly recommend keeping the buggy till the gate - useful to hang your hand luggage on as well as keep the baby from crawling off. And then have always used a sling to get on and off, which again makes it easier to carry your own stuff with you.

Live in London so used to getting public transport all the time, which means we just get trains/buses to the airports. But would be great if there's someone to give you a lift as someone else has suggested.

Remember, Spain will have formula in the shops so you can save on luggage hassles if you take just enough cartons for the first day or so and get the rest when you're there. Or ask your friends to get them in advance for you. By 7mo you'll probably be starting on solids so you can also request some choice fruit and veg for you to cook when you get there.

We recently went to Spain with our DS who was then only 12 weeks but we took the ferry not the plane which was great because we took A LOT of stuff on board as I was expressing milk then too. It also meant we could take our pram and carseat with us.

When you are out there they do sell formula but it's packaged differently, we use Aptamil and you can buy that out there but it looks totally different - and they don't sell the cartons of formula so we saved those for either end of our journey. When you make up formula you need to use water that has a low sodium content iirc, loads of websites tell you which to use...we bought one called Bezoya which was perfect as we couldn't find Evian which the HV suggested we used.
