Newly potted trained child + 7 hour flight + 4 hour drive - nappies/pull ups or go for pants?

DS has been in pants for 2 mths now and is pretty much dry in the day. Still in nappies at night.

What to do on a long haul flight? Going out is a day flight but then the drive will be late evening so he may sleep

Coming home the flight is overnight

Do I stick him in pull ups for convenience or will this confuse matters?

When we had a long car journey in similar circumstances I bought a different and thus unfamiliar brand of pull ups and told DS that they were special travel pants.

To be honest they were more for my peace of mind than anything ese as I was travelling alone with the children and couldn't face the "need to go NOW" situation whilst in the fast lane of the MI

else

We recently travelled long haul with our DS who had been toilet trained during the day for 6 months. We found the pull ups greatly beneficial particulary at night time & when there was episodes of turbulance (which was v.frequent on our flight!)

On the return flight he had pull up's on the whole time but we just kept encouraging him to use the toilet frequently.

HTH's

I suggested pull up pants on our flight to NY last year, when dd was dry in the day but still had a nappy at night. She was having absolutely none of it though. "I'm NOT a baby mummy!" I just took her to
the toilet at every given opportunity and luckily we didn't have to stay strapped to the seats the whole time.

Before dd, we did an 11 hour flight with loads of turbulence and I was absolutely bursting to go. So I just made sure I had a couple of nappies in hand luggage in case of dire emergency.

Dottoressa · 18/11/2008 19:16

Pants, pants, pants. Never go back!!

If need be, stick him on a plastic bag (or something more sophisticated that will do the same job!!)

Good luck...

What about using hte disposable changing mats on the car-seat / plane? And as few layers as possible, ie just pants / pjs?

FromGirders · 18/11/2008 19:24

For ease of changing if there is an accident.

fisil · 18/11/2008 19:25

Agree, pants. We did a four hour car journey with no breaks on days 4 & 5 of potty training ds1 with no spills. Consistency is the key.

beforesunrise · 18/11/2008 19:31

pull up pants! the last thing you want is a long tiring stressful flight with an accident. i do this with dd when we fly and she always tells me when she needs a wee.

LittleMissTickles · 18/11/2008 19:39

I'm not sure you get them in the UK, but in US they sell 'piddle pads' - I think FromGirders idea of changing mat would work just as well. This will stop the seat from getting wet, and you can change his clothes very quickly. Take a few spare sets of pants and wipes, but don't go back to pullups!

SuperSillyus · 18/11/2008 21:24

We travelled with newly potty trained ds on a long flight and he wet the seat so I would go for a nappy

cmotdibbler · 18/11/2008 21:35

Pull ups. I've been on enough flights where we were in our seats for a couple of hours due to turbulence to not want to risk that with someone small and in pants. Obviously you take them to the loo as regularly as normal, but just explain that they are just in case you can't get to the loo (DS accepts that when we go on the motorway we can't just stop for the loo so he needs to have a nappy on just in case the wee won't wait).

You also don't want to arrive at your destination with a bag of wee soaked clothes.

claireyBANG · 18/11/2008 21:36

We did a long haul flight recently and dd was in a nappy. She is still in nappies overnight anyway and both flights were night ones so no different to usual I suppose. We did also put her in a nappy (a pocket one pulled up like pants) for the drive on the way out just to minimise the hand luggage-she is still unreliable especially in unfamiliar situations and didn't want to be carrying 10 changes of clothes. She still told us when she needed to go but there was one time we didn't make it in time so I was glad of the nappy.

It depends how good they are at holding it I suppose, on a flight there a quite a few times when you can't get to the toilet and if one of those is the time when they need to go...

GColdtimer · 18/11/2008 21:38

When we had a long car trip recently I brought some pull ups that she had never seen before (pink with princesses on) and put them over her knickers. That way, if she had an accident, it would only be her knickers that were wet and she wouldn't have to sit in wet clothes if we couldn't stop.

So, I would say both - pull ups over pants. Best of both worlds!

TheBlonde · 19/11/2008 08:05

Thanks for all the answers - I think I'm leaning towards pullups

I would deffo agree with snice for your own peace of mind. Make them very very special travel pants?!

sunandmoon · 19/11/2008 09:19

We did 5 hours flight with our DD just potty trained... be ready for many back & forward trips to the toilet in the plane!! We did put a pullup on her but the toilet was a very exciting place to go and play.. Make sure you close the toilet bowl before flushing, the toilets are very noisy and can scare your DS. Explain to your DS that you need to put a pullup just in case he fells asleep... mention it days before, so he gets use to the idea, I agree with Wowooo about very special travel pants
Safe trip!

I can't believe nobody has been falling over themselves telling me what I great idea mine was. I thought it was inspired.
