cremolafoam · 07/11/2008 12:55

lovely

Thank you for those! Some are too pricey for us. The one you stayed in looks gorgeous - but according to google maps is 2 hours from Blois - are there chateaux nearby? And things for a 2 and 4 year old to do?

Haven't stayed in Gite in the Loire but have booked French Gites for past 4 yrs via HolidayLets.com (think it's .com - google holidaylets and you'll find it!) You book direct with the owner so it works out much better value than the agencies and we have stayed in some lovely places. Also look at France for Families website - they have some links to Gites and we found a great one last year via their links.

The gite we stayed in was in Bourgogne on the other side of the Loire, about 20km to Sancerre. It was remote and no, not a great deal for kids unless you were willing to get in the car every day.Dh and I went on our own for a week of total collapse.
For the chateaux you will need to be close to Tours, Orleans, Blois or even Angers.

We stayed near Doue La Fontaine on another occasion and were able to see Villandry and Azay le rideau castles and to visit \link{ www.la-recreation.com\La Recreation }which was a fab day out for dd when she was about 5.It's a fun park where all the rides etc are made form recycled rubbish. Fab!

Tours is a beautiful city in itself and might be worth a look.Vouvray is also very pretty. this looks nice

I can recommend a good campsite with excellent mobile homes near Chambord if you would consider that instead? Great pool area and small enough that it is safe to let the kids roam by themselves...

We've stayed hereIt's lovely and very reasonably priced....not sure it's the right area - close to Chateaudun and Chartres.

not a gite but we stayed here in one of the lodges great little pool, good central loire location.

No gite experience because my Mum & Dad live 10 minutes from Amboise. But How old are your kids? II've spent every holiday for the last 4 years there and it's a lovely part of the world. There's lots to do apart from the obvious chateaux. In Amboise My little one's have enjoyed Beaumarchais Safari , The Mini Chateaux Park, The Loire Aquarium and not too far there's lulu parc its not very sophisticated but my 5 year old and and i spent a whole day there and he didn't want to leave.

Thank you everyone, you've all been very helpful. We have something organised from tomorrow - (see, we are in Clermont Ferrand, 3 have been on the road 3 months in a campervan now, and need a little break). Thanks for all the tips - the kids are 2.5 and 4 years.
