Best portable DVD player for longhaul flight

I will soon be doing a longhaul flight with DD who is 2.5 and want to take a portable DVD player to keep her entertained when she is not sleeping. I have a cheap one that someone gave me (I think it's Ferguson or something like that) but I don't think the battery life is very long. I am thinking of buying a new one, just to make sure I have a long lasting battery.
Can anyone recommend one? I think "Which" did a review of portable DVD players fairly recently, but I don't subscribe to it...
Can anyone help?

last time I flew long haul all the seats had their own screen in the back with enough choices of games and films even for littlies.

But to answer your question I got a dvd player for £30 from ebay, the battery lasts 2.5 hours, I don't think you'll find one that will last a long flight.

Thanks FJ.
I know from bitter exerience that not all planes have their own screens - only the new planes do, and Qantas has quite a few planes that are quite old.
Yes, I know that I am unlikely to get more than 3 hours or so, but happy to pay up to £150 for something that will be good quality.

We have this Philips one. Chosen earlier in the year based on battery life - but can't remember what it is - just the best I could find. It is pretty good, but the hinge bit on ours is coming apart - but it may have been dropped by a child.

It also will run off an ipod, so you could take all films on that rather than lots of DVDs.

The reviews are very mixed, so seems that fi you are unlucky you are very unlucky!

Thanks jicky.

We have a great panasonic (ls86) one with a battery life of up to 13hrs depending on the settings. I think it costs GBP 150-200 - got ours in NZ so completely different prices.

I am looking into getting a portable DVD player too for a trip to Australia next month with our 1 and 3 year olds. I just looked at the Which review but its not helpful as it needs updating. In its reviews the one with the longest battery life they tested was a Philips with only 5.25 hours. I am looking into getting the Panasonic one too. I saw it at an airport a couple of weeks ago. It looked nice but was a bit heavier than some of the others on display. I guess that's probable because of the big battery! Catper33- do you know whether you can put 2 sets of headphones in it?

BTW The Panasonic is £187 at Amazon at the moment. www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DVD-LS86EB-K-Portable-Headphones-Included/dp/B0015LV7AK/ref=sr_1_5 ?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227659097&sr=1-5

I have ended up getting the Sony - quite small and light, and the battery life is supposed to be 5 hours. Good price at Amazon.
It's being delivered tomorrow, so have not tested it yet ! The only annoying thing is that it only plays region 2 DVDs, so I have just realised that if I get any new DVDs while in Australia, I will not be able to play them on it (try explaining that to a 2.5 year old...)...

Am v surprised that Qantas could be flying any longhaul routes without seatback tv??

bigspender30 · 05/12/2008 11:44

You can also buy a separate battery pack to attach however you need to check with the airline first that you are allowed to carry it on board.

wannaBe · 05/12/2008 11:51

depends how much you want to spend. but we have one of

these

you can load all your dvd's on it so no need to carry dvd's as wel.

and all your music too...
