TURKEY - WHAT CURRENCY SHOULD I TAKE?

Anyone gone recently?

I am going to Turkey soon and when I went in May,I took Lira - as advised by travel agent - only to find that most shops had prices in euros or dollars and then had to convert

think its becasue they want to get into the europeon and then if already using euros should be easier

so what should I take - lira, euros or dollars?

Thanks

Assuming your own currency is British pounds, take your own money. Change as needed into Turkish lira.

You lose a bit every time you change between currencies, so there is no sense in changing from pounds to dollars and then to lira.

Foreign currency might be quoted in shops that predominantly serve tourists, but euros or any other foreign currency is not the norm.

If you will be staying in mainly towns/tourist areas with servicetills the best advice is to open a Nationwide Flex Account before you go. The rate they offer is always better than any bank/exchange or jewellery shop rate and there is no commission. For hard currency I agree with CoteDAzur - just take pounds, but make sure you get them from the bank. There are apparently quite a few forged notes around in the UK and 3 unhappy tourists who tried to exchange them in turkey were arrested this summer and are still awaiting trial. (Hope this doesn't sound too alarming, but felt it fair to warn you). Have a great time.
