Help! 29hour flight with 6mo and 23 mo..........

Hi,
DH and i are flying to NZ in a month with ds1 who will be 23 months, and ds2 who will be six months.
We havent bought ds1 a seat, which in hindsight seems foolish, but it's too late now! I am thinking sticker books, a portable dvd player, ipod with nursery rhymes etc..

But I want to know, how do you manage bottles for a 6 month old for this period of time, i am guessing it will be about 8 bottles which is all we have, and we will need some for when we get there etc. I just have no idea!
Also, do the airlines give out whole milk for toddlers?

This is just going to be a nightmare....... why why why! At least it's only one way!

Hi Kaybee
I travelled to Oz with dd1 (10yo) and dd2(5mo)last year and found that the disposable steribottles were really good. I just filled up flight bag with what I thought I would need and then added a couple more. Advantage was that the bag got emptier and we went! I also used the cartons of SMA which I bought once through security at the airport.

Have just come back from USA with dd who is now 18mths and found DVD fab (loads of Postman Pat!). Depending who you are flying with you may have power at your seat so that you can plug in and not rely soley on battery. Should also have quite a few kids shows on board for ds1.

Have to say that I did OZ with dd1 when she was about 20months old and didn't have a seat for her and found it a complete nightmare as I couldn't do anything (like go to the loo or eat!) as she was asleep on me for a lot of the journey but I didn't have DH with me so will be better for you.

Im assuming you have booked bulkhead seats and bassinet???? If you are going with BA they have seats as well as cots for babies so maybe dd1 would fit in one of those......

Goodness! Aquaplay is useful as can be coloured with the water pen over & over! Plus no mess. Take some hand cleaner for you with the bottles & your ds if he's not in nappies. Not sure on the milk situation....

Are you moving there?

Kaybeeand2boys · 30/09/2008 10:14

Yes we're moving there (i am a kiwi anyway but DH is english!)
And yes we have a basinet for ds2

Thanks, think i will def get some steribottles. We use Aptimil for ds2, so not sure whether to hope they have it behind security, guess its not the end of the world if he has to have something else, we'll have to change in nz anyway as they don't ahve it!

Hi I travelled to Oz with DD (then aged 10 months)last year.

I used cartons of aptamil bought before I went through security and found that they didn't have a problem letting baby milk/food through.

I also used sterry bottles and disposable bibs.

Check with your airline about milk and also disposable nappies as they take up a lot of space and some airlines provide them.

I have done the Oz flight several times with DC's of various ages and it's never been as bad as I thought it was going to be!

It's only a day and a night

good advice about ref the cartons of milk once you get through security as due to the ignorance/stupidity of some of the security staff you may have issues taking more than a few bottles of ready made formula. Also, might not be too good after that many hours. Just in case they may not have cartons once through security why not take some powdered formula in a plastic bag or small tin so you can make it up as you need it. All the airlines will supply you with hot water, just make sure you make it well in advance of needing it so it will cool down. Portable dvd player sounds a good idea. Also, try to check in early if you can as you never know, if there is a spare seat you may get it. You should also get the bulkhead (with more legroom!) as you have an infant so fingers crossed you get this. some airlines will let you check in and reserve your seats online so do this early to try to get good seats,. Good luck.

When we went last year I phoned Boots at the airport and got them to put cartons of milk aside for me - just to make sure!

Ive done the OZ jaunt loads with DCs (with and without DH) and I agree with Lillypie - it is never as bad as you think it will be. But make sure you have couple of spare set of clothes for yourself....just in case.

BTW Im hideously jealous wish I was moving back home!

Kaybeeand2boys · 01/10/2008 21:53

wow thanks everyone
and great idea Dottie about phoning ahead, think i will do that.

My ds1 cant sit still for 5 seconds let alone an entire flight! Nightmare Nightmare Nightmare!!
