MIL is in hosp down there and we'll be spending a lot of time down there. Any tips of good places to take toddlers would be very welcome. TIA

Poole Park is close to the hospital and has swings etc, ducks to feed and Gus Gorilla's. There's also a cafe and a miniature railway. If you fancy swimming there is the Dolphin swimming pool just the other side of the park. The Dolphin Shopping centre is within walking distance and the main library is there too. This may also give you some more ideas.

Not so much in Wimborne but there is a rec opposite the hospital there and Wimborne also has a library.

Further out is Farmer Palmers (good in all weathers) and Monkey World.

Agree Farmer Palmers is good. If you want to go a bit further out Moors Valley is about half an hour's drive from Poole (if you avoid rush hour).

Corfe Castle isn't far, but he might be a bit young to appreciate it.

Lizzzombie · 26/09/2008 07:52

Does Wimborne still have that miniature village? I used to love that when I was little. (maybe 1 is too young, but could be fun) It used to be just near the Minster iirc.

Lizzzombie · 26/09/2008 07:53

Here - imagine the amusing photo possibilities of a giant toddler!

Chocolateteapot · 26/09/2008 07:58

The model village is great for that age group, there are little playhouses to toddle in and out of. You could combine that with a trip to Honeybrook farm which has good playgrounds and animals to look at plus a little cafe and farm shop, follow the signs to Cranborne from Wimborne to get there.

TheConfusedOne · 26/09/2008 08:06

Second Honeybrook farm, and Hamworthy park as well.

Think the model village is closed for the winter.

brimfull · 26/09/2008 08:30

model town still open here

alittleteapot · 26/09/2008 13:29

wow, you lot this is BRILLIANT thank you SO MUCH. We have discovered dolphin shopping centre already but none of the rest. Really thank you. It's a difficult time and one of those moments you're really grateful for Mumsnet.

If you want the beach, Alum Chine is a good spot as there is a children's play area with a sandpit in a pirate ship, and cafe next door.

Marne · 26/09/2008 14:33

A trip to toys r us
Poole park is lovely as is farmer palmers.

ChippyMinton · 26/09/2008 14:34

Dolphin pool (near Poole Park) has a good training pool if you fancy a swim.

alittleteapot · 26/09/2008 17:12

In Broadstone (between Poole and Wimborne) there's Kids Kingdom (indoor soft play) at the Sports Centre and a swimming pool.

Upton Park is lovely for a run around/walk or picnic (if it's warm enough!).

Baiter isn't far from the hospital either and again nice just for a run around/blowing away the cobwebs. Nice views over the harbour from there. I can't remember if there are swings.

There's a little land train that runs around between the Dolphin Centre and I think the park or the quay or Baiter .... not much use am I .

Surfermum · 26/09/2008 17:46

Land Train

alittleteapot · 26/09/2008 22:09

Great, thanks so much

just a thought -are there any stay and play or one o'clcok club type things where she could run around with other toddlers?

Surfermum · 28/09/2008 11:43

There's one at St John's Church in Broadstone on Wednesdays, 1-3 and costs around 80p. It's in Macauley Road, but if you get to Broadstone and ask anyone you would find it easily (famous last words). I don't go any more as dd is at school now, but I went for a couple of years.

Creekmoor Library do a singing session - and you get filter coffee and biscuits for free! That's between Poole and Broadstone. I think it's Tuesdays. Broadstone Library have storytime on Mondays I think at 11.

How is your MIL?

Surfermum · 28/09/2008 11:43

There are other toddler groups in Broadstone but I didn't used to go - you'd get details in the library.

alittleteapot · 28/09/2008 14:03

Thanks Surfermum, will check those out.

MIL not too good. It was a stroke and she seems to have deteriorated a bit but they say that can happen in the first week. On the up side (trying to find positives) she is (was) extremely fit and active so I hope that gives her the best shot at pulling through.

OP posts:
Surfermum · 28/09/2008 18:38

Oh dear . I hope she improves. My FIL has had a stroke and has recently had some more small ones from the stress of MIL being diagnosed with cancer and having two hip replacements.

Are they keeping her at Poole?

alittleteapot · 30/09/2008 20:26

Yes she's at Poole for the next few weeks at least. Sorry to hear about your FIL and MIL. Hard, isn't it, when they start getting old.

OP posts:
alittleteapot · 30/09/2008 20:27

that didn't come out quite right, cos she doesn't seem old. just that things start going wrong...

OP posts:
Surfermum · 30/09/2008 22:02

It is hard. I've just got back from Bournemouth Hospital where my own Dad is after a hip replacement. He's just had a blood clot in one his eyes and has lost his sight in it permanently. He won't be driving again .
