Time limits for Infant Carrier/Car Seats?

I was looking to get an Infant carrier/car seat for transporting Piglet, and was told by the shop assistant (a mum) that a baby of up to 9 months can not be left in an infant carrier/car seat for more than two hours at a time. Is this advice correct? and if so why?

I thought this applied more to tiny babies than bigger ones - tiny babies should be lying flat, or close to it, for their spines. Car seats are not very flat.

Being in them for a while is fine, but ages and ages is a problem.

I've read somewhere it's because of too much pressure on spine as the position is not natural.

because they rae not very conmfortable are they. if making a long journey then we tend to stop every couple of hours for feeds/toilet breaks anyway, and have never used a travel system.

WitchFinderGeneral where did you read this. More info please. We regularly do journeys of greater than two hours and we were told this was a problem. Are there any alternative car seats out there that you know of which will not harm our baby's back?

I think you need a "Lie-flat" car seat there are a few out there......they have been discussed - search on archived threads for them

PigletsDad - here is a link that goes into all this a bit: here . I don't think the two hours thing is a strict rule, once in a while is fine, but you wouldn't want to have your baby do it often.

Cant remember but in more than one place. I have also read on mumsnet that lie back ones are very dangerous in a crash. Have they stopped making them now?
