Las Vegas with toddler

Dh is 30 this year and I would really like to take him away. We've both wanted to go to las vegas ever since we've met and I was thinking of this for his birthday. However, having said that was wondering if this would be a suitable place to take ds. He'll be nearly 2 at the time. Would appreciate any thoughts or advice on this from anyone who has been.

hope you get a reply. Dp is 40 and I thought of las vegas for a treat too. But he's recently been for friend's wedding and said it's not great for kids. I'm kind of hoping you get some more positive replies.

The most family friendly place I can think of in LV is the Four Seasons (its where the Mandalay Bay is but it has a totally separate entrance).
This is the only hotel in LV where you do not have to walk through a casino to get to your room.

dh went to Las Vegas on business last year and he doesn't think it's a good place for small children (ours are 5 and 3)

I have been, and I wouldn't take my kids there at the moment. I understand that there are more femily 'themed' hotels than when we went, but it is geared around the casinos. they are fun for an adult at night, but are so sad in the morning when you still see people playing the machines. Lots of 'all you can eat' buffets, not geared to kids food. It can also be blisteringly hot....fine inside,as the places are all a/c but the minute you go outside it is like opening an oven door (no exageration!) So even going outside to swim could be tricky with a little one. Also some of the areas are rather iffy.....to say the least.

Sorry to put a downer on it, but I wouldn't go with small kids (and mine are 5 and 8) it is more geared to adults

I'll let you know as we're there for 5 days in 4 weeks and we're taking the kids 16mths and very nearly 7, with us, also assorted family will be in tow including 4 year old cousin, so we should hopefully have some idea by the time we get back of what its like for the kids! there is a site

Thanks everyone it's what i thought but wanted to get some opinions too. Frizbe it'd be good to hear what you think when you get back especially as ds will be more or less the same age as one of your children. Hope you have a lovely time.

Took my 3 year old 10 years ago & he loved it. His earliest memories are of Las Vegas! Has it changed an awful lot in recent years? (We stayed at the Luxor)

I went there 4 years ago and considered it a child friendly place. We stayed at circus circus which is geared towards children. I also thought that all the hotel free attractions are good for children. I didnt consider it to be seedy or a place you wouldnt want to take them. Yes you wouldnt want to take them into the casinos but when we went we didnt go there either. There is much more to vegas than gambling. Were going there in 3 weeks with 10 month old dd.

I've been and sorry but IMHO it's not a place for toddlers. Main reasons:

• baking heat (40 degC +)
• no facilities, its all geared to older people who can actually gamble
• nine hour flight to and from UK (you'd deserve a medal!)

Hi I'm going to las vegas to get married in three weeks. We are taking two teenagers and my 20 month old nephew.

We are staying at the excalibur and having been to vegas before we are happy to return with children. We decided on excalibur as it is child friendly. I think taking children to Vegas is similar to taking them to any city. Not necessarily all about childrens entertainment but with plenty of free stuff to see a good varied selection of things to do we think it will be fine.

The restaurants are maybe not all child friendly but we have always found waiting staff are certainly helpful and do try to make things easy for you.

i will be able to advise you further when we get back in mid september if you can wait that long.

We went as part of RTW trip in 2002 with DS aged nearly 7 years

We had great time we went out into the desert, there is a nature trail to follow in RED CANYON

We did it in late afternoon

We stayed in MGM GRAND

They have real lions there inside the hotel which is a bit cruel but they have a larger enclosure out of view IIRC so is like a zoo. You get very very close to them ie they were asleep on the glass above our head.So you saw their paws from underneath. IYSWIM. This was free to go and see them.

Children are not allowed to stand near gaming tables or slot machines, but are allowed to walk through.

I went to Vegas pre children, and whilst it wouldn't be my first choice of holiday with small children, I could see my 3 yr old enjoying it. She it too young to 'compute' / be affected by the sadness / decadence ..whatever, of people playing the machines at 7.00 a.m. ....

It is very hot but then so are many beach holidays that parents take kids too. In fact given the plus 40 degrees heat in Portugal currently and sponateous fires, I'm worried about the Ccarefully family's summer holiday later this month.

All the buildings are air conditioned. The hotels are like a visual theme park - simulated exploding volcanoes, an indoor canal complete with godoliers inside one hotel etc. Rather beautiful dancing fountains set to classical music at the Bellagio (I know some mumsnetters will be going eek, how crass at this, but I'm not all that cynical). My dd would be in awe.
