taking 2 little kids round the world - all advice welcome

Dh and I are planning to buy round the world tickets this weekend for ourselves and 2 children - DD (4y) and DS (18 m). The vague plan is to go to New York to buy all the stuff we might need then Canada (Toronto and Calgary/Rockies) to visit friends/family. After that we'll probably head somewhere like San Fran or Yosemite before heading for Australia then NZ. Probably stop somewhere beachy/ Singapore on the way home. We're going May/June/July. Dh is on unpaid leave and I've resigned.

Yup, you're right, we must be asolutely mad. Clearly DD will remember some of it and enjoy it but who, in their right mind, chooses to go on a trip to the supermarket with their 18 month boy, let alone right around the world. However the deed is done. I've handed in my letter of resignation so now we just need to make it happen.

If anyone has any advice, particularly about mustsee/mustdo stuff for Australia (in June/July)or about travelling with little ones in general please let me know. I've started trawling through the travel bit of MN, not to mention lots of serious googling but any advice welcome

Thanks

Junior Magazine had an article from a family that did exactly the same thing you're doing!!! Children about the same age as well i think. the magazine's website is www.juniormagazine.co.uk.

i can't seem to access it though recently.
Have fun!!

Did you look up Adventure Motorhomes in NZ?

nappybaglady · 01/03/2005 20:41

RTKM - have looked up that motorhome company - looks great. Hoping to read NZ guide this week so can plan trip then get something booked. Hope all the rugby fans haven't booked up already.

Blossom2 - I'd forgotten all about the lovely Junior magazine. Will try to find that, thanks

the family did Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Cook Islands, Tahiti and America. Kids were 3 (boy) and 18 mths (girl).

**Your Childs Health Abroad - DR J Wilson Howarth & Dr M Ellis, Bradt Publishing,£8.95
**www.masta.org - vaccine info & medical kits
**www.trailfinders.com - independent travellers
** East Coast & Australia - D Donal, Footprint, £12.99

There are a couple of other books on the Cook Islands and Fiji, which i dont think you're going to so have left them out.

nappybaglady · 01/03/2005 21:16

Thanks for that.

Good to know that someone has taken 18m old on such a trip. Some days I look at him and think we must be crazy...but it will be such fun.

You should try and get hold of the article. It's unlifting and inspiring. the kids also caught chickenpox on the trip!!! certainly made me want to take my DD on a round the world trip.

I hope it all goes well and you all have a fantastic time. Dont let any doubts crept into your mind - once in a lifetime opportunity - ENJOY!!!

nappybaglady · 01/03/2005 21:35

Am currently actively looking for chickenpox. DD has had it but DS hasn't. Am hoping to find a dose soon!!!!
