Singapore Hotels - Recommendations ...

Can anyone please recommend a really nice Singapore hotel with good facilities for a 3 yr old and a baby (ie. pool/gardens). We're only there for 1 night but 2 full days so won't be venturing too far.

thanks

Haven't checked this thread in a few days ...

CSA - thanks for the tip re the cooking oils. Shall certainly bear that in mind.

Eidsvold - which Raffles did you eat at? I was having a look at Raffles site and saw they have an American restaurant which might be good with DS's nut allergy. Was it this one? And what/where is Chimes?

Eldestgirl - eek ... I'd envisaged a good half day at Underwater World - that puts a different light on things.

Pam70 - there's no way DS2 would sit on your knee for 15 mins never mind 12+ hr stints! He's too big for the bassinet so we've paid a child fare (more money) to get him his own seat. Means we have to bring our carseat with us but hopefully worth it! Please let us know how you get on and any hints & tips - shall keep an eye on this thread in March again!

And for everyone .. the Swissotel ... what size are the rooms? Are they big/do they have junior/mini suites to give us more space? And if we stay in Singapore as opposed to Sentosa what could we do with the children during the day - it's sooo humid, I guess I thought that even with the heat at least Sentosa would have the beach but now I'm wondering whether city centre would be better but amusements are important!!

Think that's all my ?'s for now!!

Thanks

Millie - what sort of carseat are you taking- Rockatot type or forward facing? Have you checked with airline about whether it will fit. We're flying in May so I'm interested in your experience. We too have bought a seat for our (18m) baby.

eidsvold · 17/02/2005 03:49

the raffles hotel also has a raffles kinda shopping complex as part of it - several eating places there. The swissotel we stayed at has the complimentary shuttle bus which actually stops at a huge shopping mall - across the road from Raffles - we spent time at the shopping centre.

We spent a lot of time travelling around - it was June when we went. Dd1 loved the pool - shaded and a toddler pool as well as the adult pool.

Chijmes ( think that is the correct spelling - I know I spelt it incorrectly last time) was an old church/convent - church is still there but beside it is lots of restuarants - brilliant food and great service and they fussed over dd - almost to the point we had to remind them about dh and I

As we were emigrating we bought dd's car seat with us - fitted into the seat on the plane - she had her own + bassinet ( but she is small) brilliant to put her in on taking off and landing - think she also slept for a few hours in her seat - reclined. Also handy to strap in the car when we got our transfer to the hotel - we hailed a minibus - too much luggage to do anything but!!! Dd's seat was a forward facing britax eclipse from memory. In the cab and shuttle bus (during the days) we just strapped her in and held on tight.

Things we did - zoo, sentosa for a day, cable car trip across to sentosa then right to the start and then back to the metro, the metro ( underground) sooooo clean and efficient and so on. Easy to take buggy through, airconditioned - such a shock after tube in London!!!, shopping - visiting suntec city - biggest shopping mall in either southern hemisphere or asia - can't remember. Has the fountain of wealth - huge fountain ..... went to some gardens near us for dd to have a play, cruised the river - she loved going up and down the river on the bumboats..... we went right to the mouth of the river to where the merlion was, raffles landing place and museum.

Think we had the pocket rough guide and decided each night what we would do the next day.

For only two days - you could do the zoo early morning and then to Sentosa, raffles etc the next day to keep you near the city.... ( places I would not have wanted to miss.)Just remembering our zoo experience - we had a downpour that lasted about three quarters of an hour - we were stuck in the viewing area for the baboons - I know what every shade of pink to red on a baboons butt means now

If you are worried about his nut allergy - I am sure you could do maccas for the little one and get it take away and then walk around the corner to the clarke quay restuarants - adults have great food and ds has his maccas - they were so laid back and helpful.

I am sure he would definitely love a bumboat ride up or down the river... really is soo much to see. and the boats are cool - little stinky with the old deisel but relaxing way to travel.

sorry raved on and forgot to answer your question - chijmes is across the road from raffles - they are sort of around the same block/ intersection.

Hi, I haven't read all the other replies but can I just recommend the Shangri-La hotel in Singapore... we flew with Singapore Airlines too and got a night in this 5 star hotel just off the main street (is it called Orchard Rd?) for the equivalent of £80 (for the room, not each)by booking through the airline....including a baby cot and two double beds, absolutely beautiful room and couldn't fault the hotel. Gorgeous pool and nice grounds (although we were too knackred to enjoy them with a two-week old baby!)

csa · 17/02/2005 09:14

millie, the beach is going to be too hot to be out there for the day. it is the humidity that will get you. much better off in air conditioned places and the pool.

also, not sure what time/day flight you are taking with singapore airlines. if it is an off peak flight, there may be the possibility when checking in to ask if you can have the middle section blocked off so that you get an extra seat (for free ). we did that when we went last summer and it was bliss cos ds could lie down and go to sleep on the 2 seats between us. however, singapore airlines can be very busy and fully booked so not sure it will be possible. good luck.

Millie1 · 17/02/2005 10:45

Only have 2 secs and will respond to all properly later but thank you for soooo much information - it's invaluable!!

Jammydodger ... we've considered the Shangri-la (was first choice) but they e-mailed to say that due to 'unique room layout' we couldn't have a double, single and cot only double and cot or double and single! Might try ringing them.

Back again ...

Nappybaglady - we're taking a forward facing - apparently it has to be ff and to meet British safety standards. Ours is a Maxi Cosi Priori and hopefully should be okay. BTW, is it you who is posting on another thread re going round the world with the kids? What an experience for you all!

Eidsvold - more brilliant info and advice - thank you!

CSA - that's a good idea. We're flying out at end of April, Sat at 6.30pm - the 6.30pm seems to be the least popular of their flights so you never know. No harm in asking anyway!

Definitely decided now to stay in S'pore rather than Sentosa and whoever made the suggestion about McD's (Eidsvold?) and letting DS eat in in restaurants whilst we have 'proper' food - BRILLIANT idea!! I'm drooling already - oh but I'm still b/feeding so will need to avoid nut dishes too - aargh!

Thanks all!

Yes we're the crazy folk going round the world. Hence I'm asking everyone for advice. Ours is a maxi cosi priori too. Can't quite imagine how it will fix to an airline seat - think I need to get the instructions out. Not decided whether to take it yet or not.

Good luck on your trip

eldestgirl · 21/02/2005 12:01

I manage to squeeze a huge toddler size Britax carseat onto Singapore Airlines so you should be OK with Maxi Cosi. They get really hot in it though, so recommend a cotton sheet behind their back and just a cotton long sleeved t shirt. Was quite shocked by how much they sweat otherwise!

Don't worry too much about the heat and humidity. The best thing about Singapore is that you can dive into air con just about anywhere for a rest. Even the zoo has air con "shelters" where you can cool down for a bit. If it all gets a bit much, it's very easy to hail an air-con taxi and whizz back to your hotel room.

Millie1 · 13/03/2005 17:55

Still procrastinating re hotel!! Has anyone stayed at the Swissotel Stamford? According to SIA literature they can't do triple rooms at Swissotel Merchant Court hence the query re other hotel.

TIA1

OP posts:
eidsvold · 13/03/2005 21:27

Whilst I haven't stayed there - I imagine the standard of service etc would be the same in all Swissotels and Merchant Court was brilliant in terms of service, cleanliness, facilities - can't imagine the stamford would be any less. Is that one near the Suntec Plaza or am I thinking of a different one? AM sure our shuttle bus stopped there as well as raffles....( I think - brain fuzzy)

Millie1 · 13/03/2005 21:41

Thanks Eidsvold ... I think so ... is that a large shopping centre - it's definitely near one of those (hey but then we're talking Singapore and that probably applies to a lot of places!).

OP posts:
eidsvold · 14/03/2005 06:32

yeh it is the one of the biggest.... I think it is - I can't imagine why the hotel would offer a shuttle if it wasn't to one of their other hotels iykwim. I will try and dig out our singapore guide and check but am pretty sure.
