Booking my train ticket like this saves a huge amount of money- is there any reason why I can't do it?

I'm doing a 5 1/2 hour train journey next month with the 2 dc and dh. We've managed to get an advance saver ticket on the outward leg for £40 but the best price for the return journey is £138 . We've been trying lots of different combinations and if we break the journey down by buying several different tickets on the same journey on the same train (i.e we take the same train but have tickets from a to b then b to c then c to d etc etc) it works out at £65.
This seems slightly too good to be true- is there any reason why we can't do this? I'm sure I read something about it on the moneysaving website but wondered if anybody had actually successfully tried it?
TIA

No reason why you can't do it as far as I know. You sometimes find this when you are travelling part of the journey at peak time - if it's one ticket the whole thing counts as peak.

i've done it sheffield to llanelli, where i've bought a sheffield to birmingam new street then other new street to cardiff then another cardiff to llanelli

didn't seem to have a problem acceot had to move seats.

I saw it on the guardian money saving pullouts. Lots of people do it I think, particulalry when having to do the first part of the journey during peak time.

As long as you move seats it's totally fine. Dh does it when going to London. It saves a MASSIVE amount of money!

Is definately fine - my Dad does this all the time & saves loads of money.

Excellent, seemed a bit too good to be true but looks like it's doable! Dh is convinced he can get it for even cheaper so will keep looking. the thought of moving seats with a 4 yo and a baby is a bit daunting but worth it for the saving!
The mind boggles at how it can cost £40 one way and £140 the other though...
