Interesting city break recommendations

I am looking for recommendations for European city breaks. We have visited quite a few cities over the last few years and have particularly enjoyed the cities with an interesting history but also with a beautiful nature type location close by to visit for a day.

Places where we have been able to do this include, Porto (Douro Valley), Zagreb (Plitvice Lakes) , Ljubljana (Lake Bled), Gothenburg (Islands) and Munich (Salzburg).

Has anyone been to Wroclow? Currently looking at going for a pre Christmas break. Looks like it might fit the OP's criteria too

Thanks again. Although we have visited quite a few European countries, we have never been to Italy or Spain. We are restricted to school holidays and don't like it too hot but also we can't decide on which region. They all look interesting.

Yes I was there in April and really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it for a visit. Gdansk is also a nice city in poland for a short break.

Was going to suggest Gdansk too. Sopot is nearby and the Hel peninsula is good for watersports. Also Malbork castle is very impressive a short train ride away.

The Hague.

Iceland. Look at Icelandair website for some interesting mini break packages.

We visited Budapest this year and it’s an amazing city. We are planning a return visit.

I loved Lisbon (and Sintra). Stockholm?

Floristian · 29/10/2026 08:02

Helsinki in the winter. Loved it, so much to do.

Decorhate · 29/10/2026 08:50

Girona in Spain. Beautiful small city and easy to walk or cycle out into the countryside.

Ilmiocompleanno · 29/10/2026 08:59

Tallinn certainly ticks the "interesting history" box! And it's on the coast, so I'm sure there must be some good nature to explore nearby.

Berlin is a splendid place.

Agree. We’ve recently returned and I absolutely loved it. It’s a city which whilst not as pretty as some, is very beautiful in its own way. I’m dying to go back and having almost crippled ourselves walking miles daily to see as much as we could next time I want to go slow and basically eat and drink my way around 😁

Lucerne, mountains lake and historical centre. It's also very close to Zurich and Titlis Glacier a bit further along. Both are worth a visit. Especially the glacier, while it is still there.

Also Lausanne.

My dh went recently for a stag do and he really liked it and said that we should go for a city break.

I've just spent the week in Dubrovnik. Veru beautiful and the weather has been amazing for this time of year. We stated at The President 5* hotel which has the best amazing views I've ever seen from the balcony. Very reasonably priced too.

Billybagpuss · 29/10/2026 17:12

Helsinki and you can take a day trip to Tallinn

AGlessandahalf · 29/10/2026 17:36

Valetta is a not so hidden gem. Tons to do and Gozo is fab for a trip too

IzzyLeng · 29/10/2026 17:44

Ghent and Bruges. I preferred Ghent and you can go to Bruges for the day via the train easily. You dont need 24 hours in Bruges for sure, it’s quite small. You could then train over to Lille to stay there for a couple of days too. Or Brussels I guess but i didn’t like Brussels.

Split in Croatia is lovely, Omis is a nice small town down the coast. Or get a boat over to Hvar and stay on the island for a few days.

i am very keen to visit Florence and also Lisbon.
