How did I not know this?

I’ve always done complicated holiday planning - separate flights, accommodation, transport, checked out and booked things to do and see - because I thought package holidays were supposed to be a bit naff, and I’ve always had a great time. But this year I decided to try the lazy route and booked an AI package to a popular tourist area, with the only agenda items to hang out by the pool and read, and go for walks along the beach. I expected to be underwhelmed, but it’s fabulous! I struck lucky with the hotel - amazing local food and decent drinks, a lovely pool, not crowded and NO KIDS. The flight was on time, transfer was as advertised, and I’m having the best holiday I’ve had in years. It’s all so laid back and carefree.

Have I just been incredibly fortunate, or are AI packages usually this good?

We lost a lot of money in 2020 because we'd booked & paid for everything for several holidays separately.
Now, we only do packages but tend to use specialist operators for the country rather than mainstream big companies.

We do both. A package holiday is entirely dependent on where you go - some are poor value compared to booking independently, others great value. Mostly I don’t want to go to the places that package holidays go and we raid trip a lot but we do a week of adults only AI every year and it is indeed fab.

What hotel did you book in Croatia? DH really wants to go in 1-2 years.

Admiral Grand Hotel in Slano just outside Dubrovnik. It’s quiet!!! I got a boat to Dubrovnik from a place right next to the hotel beach and had a brilliant day hanging out there seeing the sights.

And a whole lot of a different kind of AI…

Coming from a country background, AI will always mean Artificial Insemination.😂

Your view of package holidays dates from around 1970.

I have booked separately once or twice but it's seldom cheaper because I require flights at a civilised time from a regional airport.
You can book a package for self catering or B&B or HB. I don't book all inclusive because they cost far more than booking HB and just adding drinks to the bill. AI only worth it ime if you drink a lot or have teenagers.
We do adults only because even in term time there are families with under fives or who take school age children.

Please give details of these lovely places ☺️

We've done both in recent years - I think there are pros and cons. Package holidays are great if you want to really relax and do nothing but sometimes we want something a bit different.

That's again quite out of date. I have a bespoke package built, all the cover but tailored to what I want. We do something almost every day, move around to various locations, and just have a bit of RnR at the end. It's bought as a package but a world away from fly and flop

The world of package holidays has changed enormously the last couple of years, because many big companies are offering freelancing jobs to WFH people and it’s become a very competitive business.
They get training and access to dynamic booking platforms and their individual success relies on them being competitive and paying attention to detail.
Im glad you managed to find such a good package, it’s worth searching online in the future for these freelancers because they offer a very personal service. Usually they advertise under their own brand name with a further larger name as their contact. Eg: Go-Travel (with their contact details being Thompson etc).

I don't see an issue with a package if it's not compromising on the accomodation. I have typically found that when I look at Jet2 holidays for say a long weekend in Vienna the packages are all for hotels outside of the part of the city where we wanted to be based. I am looking at family rooms, there is far far more choice of accomodation options on there website for a couple and all very central. For this reason I haven't booked a package in ages. If they were offering the exact hotel I wanted and it was as cheap or cheaper than booking it myself I would absolutely book the package.

Try BA holidays for city breaks, we've used them several times. The choice of hotels is good , and luggage is included. EasyJet is worth checking as well.

I found them also really helpful when our flight home was cancelled while we were already at the gate. They immediately called me with a new flight, offered to book a hotel or refund the costs when we told them we already booked one (ND child and flight cancelled at 5.30pm, we needed a solution fast), they even refunded the airport hotel dinner for that night.

This happened to us when we were coming home from Madeira

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/plane-circled-over-merseyside-after-16294050

The flight landed in Madeira several hours late and as the captain had run out of flying hours he had to delay our return to the next day. Tui bussed all the passengers to hotels and flew us home the next day. No extra cost to us at all. Had we booked it all separately and flown with Ryanair we would have spent the night on wooden seats at the airport with no access to refreshments.

'Bee stuck in equipment' causes plane to circle over Merseyside

The TUI flight was en route to Funchal in Madeira when it started to circle over Merseyside
