Going to Florida - DH wants to use travellers cheques - is this the best way of dealing with the money?

We are off for a family holiday to Orlando in July, neither of us have been to the states since 1996, but last time we did we used travellers cheques - is this still an easy solution or do most people now just use their credit cards. If we do go with the travellers cheque way is it still that you can cash them when paying for stuff at disney, restaurants, etc and get change and that you just need passport to cash. Any advice on pros and cons for each way appreciated. Thanks.

Travellers cheques are still used but are a bit old hat these days. Amex now do a travellers cheque card which you can top up. You may need to show photo id like passport or photo driving licence when cashing these. ATM machines can be accessed by debit card (again, you should inform card issuer before you depart these shores) but an extra charge will be made for each withdrawal.

If you are taking your credit cards on holiday ensure that you tell the credit card company before you leave for the US that you will be holidaying there for x number of days. If you don't your credit card could be stopped and this can take some considerable time to sort out!.

Would take a mix of cash (say enough for the first two days), debit and credit cards for your stay.

We took travellers cheques - you can use them everywhere just like cash, ie you spend them and get the change in cash. You will need photo ID with you though or your Disney hotel key if you are staying at a Disney hotel and spending them at Disney. We found them a useful way to keep track of our spending too, ie knowing how many we had spent without hunting for receipts etc.

Make sure your credit card is a Nationwide or Post Office one or you will get charged 2.75% on top EVERY TIME you use your credit card.

Hi, it's a few yrs since i've used them, but I'd still go for travellers chqs than cash. All you do is hand over the chq & then the shop give you the change in cash. Make a note of ALL the chq numbers-for insurance purposes, then as & when you use them, cross them off so you have a note of ones you have & haven't used-in case of theft. If you use your debit card abroad, you will incur charges-as we did-about £50!! Ouch!!
