Hi me and my partner are looking to downsize and spend some of the winter abroad , when we retire. Does anyone do this ? Where do you go ? Do you know people there ?

For those who have neighbours who check on your property from time to time whilst you are away, do you pay the neighbours or is it a mutual arrangement?

I’ve done several cruises of 28+ days - two or more cruises added together (Caribbean), a round trip from Southampton to the Caribbean, repositioning cruises through the Panama Canal etc.

I haven’t paid my lovely neighbour but I’ve given her a nice bottle of wine and brought her back a gift from our holidays. I’ve offered to reciprocate but she hasn’t had the need to take up my offer. If we’re only away for a week or so, she doesn’t check my house, it’s only been if we’ve gone away for a longer trip.

My aunty and uncle do. They spend the whole of January in Lanzarote. Have been doing it for a few years now.

That is nice of you and her. It is a real gift to be on good terms with your neighbours.

So many retired British in Goa spending the winter there when we went last year for 2 weeks in February. Can live like kinds and queens on £50 a day, food is amazing, weather glorious, and they get all their dental work done, hips replaced etc!!

There used to be lots more Brits in Goa than there is now. I had all my teeth replaced in 2013 and they are still good and look very real, unlike the Turkey versions. I would love to be still doing it in the winter but not on my own.

We don't but my late parents would travel Europe in their Moho for 4-5 weeks at a time, 3-4 times a year. They always had the wanderlust but in retirement they made the most of it.
South & West coast of France was their favourite but they would go further afield depending on where their fancy took them. Wild camping was their choice but they would make use of the aires when available.
They did this right into their late 80's, their independence & willingness to roam caused us a bit of concern at the time but even moreso when they stopped going and they finally came clean about all their mishaps, hospital visits etc.😱

I think it made them feel alive.
Very telling that telling that my Ddad died a couple of weeks after finally getting rid of the MoHo after deciding he was perhaps getting a bit old for galavanting across Europe!☹️

Afraid our own Moho adventures are tame in comparison.😆

Now that’s what I like to hear - makes a cracking change from posts about gardening and the Daily Mail and can’t wait for my own bed etc !!
