It's on the rousdon estate, treb, a sc cottage. It did say the path to the beach was steep. Hmmm, I hope we can get to it

"steep and sustained 20 minute walk to beach". I don't like the sound of that sustained

Seatown is overlooked by Golden Cap, highest point on the coast - nice pub there as Mercy said. Ringstead Bay is probably about 3/4 hours drive from Lyme..
can recommend The Riverside at West Bay for fab fish...expensive but really very good

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/07/2008 22:37

ringstead bay andseatown

We conceived DS3 last time we went to Llyen - is that a possible addition to the to-do list Pointy??

Slubbergullion recently (last week??) had a whole thread devoted to her recent Lleyn holiday it may be worth trying to track that down. Lots of people, including me, reliving their Lleyn holidays.

If you are intending to go to the dino museaum in Dorchester, I would give it a miss tbh. Unless they have added lots of amazing things since the last time I went (live locally) it's a pricey waste of time.

In fact the Dorchester County Museum has a new dinosaur/fossil bit which is more impressive and interesting then the wholeof the dinosaur museum imo. And a lot cheaper as kids go free. Dorchester County Museum also has a fair few skeletons of iron age warriors and stuff in the area that tells about Maiden Castle. There is a quiz kids can do as they walk around. My ds's always beg to go to this museum whenever we are in Dorchester.

Pointy - we had a ovely week in Lyme Regis in April. Charmouth and th Charmouth end of Lyme are best fo fossils - we went on two fosil walks, one from the fossil centre in Charmouth and one with the mand from the old fossil Shop almost opposite the town museum in Lyme - his name was paul Crossley - we liked his walk better. For beachy things - digging, sand etc, Burton Bradstock is better - long sandy beaches, with a heath above for kite flying.

Beer beach was brilliant for rock pools - at low tide (but Lyme is v good for that, too, either along Monmouth beach towards the mmonite pavement, or on the Charmouth stretch.

We don't do 'attractions' much - the donkey sanctuary was imo unutterably tedious (but it's free and DS enjoyed it)..and i wanted to folow the signposted walk from the donkey sanctuary down to the beach. Oh well!

We hired a little motor boat from Beer beach and hopefully (in vain - but it was very early in the season) towed the mackerel lines they supplied. It was fun and the views inland and along the cliffs were lovely. Beer beach is white pebble - couple of nice unpretentious beach cafes, and a fish-selling hut on the slipway t the beach selling sprkling freshly caught fish much cheaper than the (very wonderful) fish stall close to the Cobb n Lyme Regis.

From the Cobb in LR you can take 1 hour mackerel trips.

We went for dinner in a pub at the top of the high St inLyem - it looks like a biker hang out from the outside, but has a very cosy dining room, excellent cooking, good value and very good beers - The Volunteer, think it was called. The Pilot is a pub much talked of for food but we found it deeply mediocre and over-priced.

Maiden Castle is great ! I love Dorchester - we were hoping to move there a few years ago, sadly it didn't work out.

cupcakesinthesnow · 01/07/2008 22:58

I grew up in Dorchester We live a bit further along the coast now but only an hours drive away so still visit.

Maiden castle is fab to take kids on a dry day. They love the huge mounds and hills.

I love Lulworth. Man O War Bay and Durdle door are my favourite beaches.

A trip to Brownsea Island is a must if you come closer to Poole for a day out.

pointydog · 01/07/2008 23:00

martianbishop recommended that riverside restaurant too, mary. I fear I'd be dining alone, though, as my family is not too keen on fish.

Tramway at Seaton is fab - bit expensive, but worth it imo. We saw deer and scenery along the estuary is lovely. We're going to Eype in summer holidays, so am very interested in ideas here!

Surfermum · 01/07/2008 23:19

DD enjoyed the dinosaur museum but she was 4. I 'm not sure it would be that great for a 9 and 11 year old.

pointydog · 01/07/2008 23:19

eype is very nearby, no?

Was with DS, 6, in the Volunteer. They were v friendly to him. I think they had a children's menu, of 'proper' food, but it isn't an ostensibly 'child-friendly'restaurant - it looks like an adult environment and there isn't room for lots of high chairs etc - oh - they brought him a big colouring set. There was another child in there too - they gave her a bead set to play with.

Blu · 01/07/2008 23:28

There is a pizza place on the way to the Town Mill, nar the Chip shop, and the Blue Lias gallery - very tasty pizzas, v friendly to DS - but very slow service - don't go when busy!
Fabulous cake shop at the bottom of the high st on the left facing up hill. Excellent Dorset Apple cake.
