Tromso ❄️

I’m thinking of booking a last minute trip to Tromso. Looking at December/ January so don’t have much time to plan!

What are the absolute must see/ do’s and the don’t bother activities/ sights?

Where shall we stay? I have looked at central hotels as they seem to offer us a good base to go off and do all the activities but some people seem to have split the trip with 2 days in the centre and 2 days further afield. I’m open to this but wouldn’t want to drive in the icy conditions so how have people got around this? To stay in a glass pod would be amazing!

I have heard it’s expensive. Even more so than Iceland!

It’s costing around £3k for the two of us before we factor in food/ drink and we are only going for 3 nights.

That is the type of boat I’m looking at. £500 for the two of us but it will be worth every penny!

Late November/ early December is when I think I’ll be able to take some A/L so either way, it will be reduced daylight hours. I didn’t find Iceland too bad but I do think it’s because we were busy 24/7 😂

Bear in mind that Tromsø is 400 miles further North than Reykjavik, into the Arctic Circle. That makes quite a difference to light levels in December.

From late November Tromsø is in 'polar night' which means the sun never rises at all until the end of January. Reykjavik, on the other hand, has 4 or 5 hours of daylight then.

I am not saying that to put you off - I absolutely loved Tromsø and would go back in a heartbeat. But it's smart to be realistic about what it's like there in the run up to the winter solstice.

I loved Tromso, we really enjoyed the public swimming pool (wasn’t expensive). There’s some slides for the kids but also some lovely relaxing areas including the outside spa.
We found eating out wasnt as expensive as we thought IF you forego booze.
The cable car on a clear day was really good and our friends also did the reindeer evening trips. Food included and a sledge ride which they loved. If you have young children, the troll museum was great with interactive elements. It’s in the centre of Tromso.

Whatever you’re hearing, at least double it! I was absolutely flabbergasted by the prices. Fruit is scarce and expensive. Even the crap you’d get in a supermarket here for £1 was £2-3, a bottle of water was expensive!
