Where will I like if I like the Austrian Alps?

Just had a lovely break in Austria. Stunning scenery - cable cars and peaceful panoramic walks - and apart from a couple of hotspots, not too overtouristed. Where else in Europe is like this? I know Swiss Alps are gorgeous but really concerned about it being too crowded.

Where in Slovenia is a good base? I think of Lake Bled as being super busy. Basically I want somewhere the influencers aren’t interested in 🤣

There are loads and loads of different places in the Austrian Alps, may be worth going back to a different one? I’ve been going to the Tirol for years, but have also wanted to try Kaernten (Corinthia) and the Salzkammergut is stunning!
You could also try Sudtirol? (South Tyrol in Northern Italy.)

The Valais in Switzerland isn’t at all crowded unlike the Bernese Oberland. We were there earlier this year and it was mostly middle aged German hikers. Absolutely stunning scenery.

@AmIReallyTheGrownup sounds interesting… what towns would you suggest as a base? Needs to be doable by public transport

Chamonix definitely. So much to do, loads of walks, cable cars etc.

Also Poland, Tatras mountains were worth a visit.

How about the Eifel in Germany?
Absolutely stunning mountains (although not nearly as high as the Alps), lots of lakes, caves, castles, pretty little towns and definitely not overrun by tourists.

We stay facing Lake Jasna round a small road from Kranjska Gora twice a year. It’s stunning! This is our view….

A different bit of the Austrian alps. We’ve been to a few and they’re different enough to feel different.

Truthfully that’s why the Valais hasn’t been found by TikTok yet. I’d choose a car free large resort like Saas-fee which has great local public transport but it’s a train plus the Post Bus to get there.

Yes it is sadly. Look at Toggenburg, Heidiland (yes really), Davos - amazing hiking, and I love Chäserrugg. Appenzell also delightful

Sion or Martigny. Leukerbad also nice but it’s a large village lovely spa.

We have been in mountains all over the world. You cannot beat the Dolomites. Base yourself in Ortisei.

@Mere1 can you give some recommendations of accommodation please.

Pyrenees or Alps but only in June or September. Both get really busy in peak summer.. The Pyrenees is prettier to be fair.

Following this thread as it’s right up my street. Love hinterglem in Austria in summer, stunning and such fun! Also lake bled amazing.

Black Forest in Germany. Incredible value for money too if you book an accommodation via this government tourism website https://www.hochschwarzwald.de/en/red-card as you’ll get a red card to get free entry into dozens of local attractions including museums, pools, cable cars etc as well as the Konus card which gives unlimited transport in the region and can take trains as far as Basel in Switzerland apparently.

Plus some are near beautiful Lake Titisee or up mountains.

I was in St Moritz in May, to catch the Bernina Express scenic tourist train to Tirano in Italy and back. St Moritz itself was 95 per cent a ghost town in May but I presume it reopened a bit more over the summer.
The place I liked most was probably Bern. Zermatt was busy even though a lot of hotels were closed. The view of the Matterhorn was wonderful on the special train but again expensive.

@Mere1 what are the crowds like in/around Ortisei in the summer?

Rockies and the Smokies. I have a real soft spot for the smokies, due to family. I realise it’s not the ideal time to be visiting the US but it’s a very special place.
