Florida theme parks packing essentials

We're off to Orlando in Easter 2027, mainly focusing our trip on the Universal parks. We're usually a fly-and-flop sort of holiday family, so I fear we might need some slightly more practical clothing and accessories than usual. I've already bought some decent packable ponchos, but I imagine we'd benefit from rashies and pool shoes around the water parks? I hear cotton t-shirts are a bad idea for being put and about all day, but don't necessarily want to be in that weird football shirt material all day. Welcome your tips on packing essentials for a different sort of family holiday to our usual. Thank you!

We go every year with 3 small kids. Here are the things I use the most:

  1. mini squash bottles to put into water bottles
  2. reusable water bottles if needed, but we buy the refillable universal bottles with free refills all day.
  3. good quality ponchos - the cheap ones rip and stick to your skin in the humidity.
  4. wet wipes
  5. lanyards for park tickets/express passes to be easily accessible (these are v expensive over there to buy)
  6. cooling towels
  7. snacks that won’t melt- crisps etc - my kids get hangry very quickly
  8. sun hats and sun cream
  9. a small bum bag for money/phone - most rides allow these on - there are free lockers for others but they won’t fit huge rucksacks in them so bear this in mind. (We take a pram so always leave the bigger rucksack on the pram and take valuables to the locker/onto the ride)
  10. water shoes for the water parks
  11. UV tops for the water parks - once you’re burnt it’s no fun!

This is super helpful, thank you. I hadn't thought of some of these. And I had a visceral response to the idea of a cheap poncho clinging in the humidity, I imagine like when you get wrapped in a hot, wet shower curtain. Lanyards and cooling towels are things I would never have considered.

to add to @Ymamiss excellent list.

After having a god awful experience on our trip last year, take blister plasters. My comfortable sandals that I’ve used on many trips failed me and gave me massive blisters. Drove to wallgreens and target and they don’t have anything as good as compeed ones!
Small fans but cooling towels are better.
We have stopped bothering with ponchos and take a small brolly or dive for cover and wait it out.

we wear themed cotton T-shirts and never got sweaty would rather that then be all practical in wicking T-shirts.

I swear by my Roman knee length stretch shorts, for Florida holidays they are really comfy and cool, but you may be more of a dress person. In which case take some Lanacane cream for chub rub, even skinny thighs get it after a while.

swat up on parks and use their apps before you go. We were glad we’d done a bit of homework before our 1st visit. Watch some you tubers, tim tracker is popular and we like ear scouts if you’re going to Disney.

have a fab time, it’s such a wonderful holiday. We’re having a break as we have promised to do some shorter haul holidays with friends and planning Japan or California trip in a few years time.

Moleskin (and a pair of scissors) for your feet, or stick it to your sandals.

Wouldn’t bother with a poncho. If rain is forecast wear lightweight synthetic shorts and T-shirt that will dry quickly once the sun comes out. And have a pair of crocs or something so that your trainers don’t get soaked through. Honestly the worst thing is wet socks and shoes.

The Uniqlo crescent shaped bags are the best park bags, big enough to cram in the essentials, but not hot and sweaty on your back like a backpack. Get one for everyone, don’t become the pack mule!

Ask for chilled water at the quick service restaurants, no need to carry bottle around, just allow for rehydration stops.

Water shoes and rashies are good for the water parks.

Ziploc plastic bags in different sizes have a multitude of uses: snacks, putting your phone etc in for water rides, wet swimwear.

Depending on if you are staying onsite and towels are included, pool or hamman towels.

Definitely a bumbag. I loop my cap to it too when not wearing it. I’ve wore flip flops every time - feet too hot in trainers. Fit flops for the win, as they have an arch. Took ponchos- wore them once last time in August. Easter is not as wet as August. Cotton t-shirts/vests are best. We didn’t need pool shoes at Typhoon Lagoon. Food is expensive and not the best in the parks.
If you have a freezer, freeze the water you are taking, and acts as a cooler for your food.

A carabiner clip is handy on your bag too, for your cap, water bottle etc.

Shufflebumnessie · 20/08/2026 19:06

Take a Compeed blister stick.
Last time we took mini fans with a water spray function, they were great.
We can not wear trainers as our feet get way too hot.
Take a microfiber towel (they fold down tiny in their own pouch) to dry off after water ride/downpour or to use as an extra layer if the aircon is too cold in a restaurant etc.
I find the lightest, most breathable, fast drying clothing is made from Viscose or Lyocell.
You can buy souvenirs much cheaper from the supermarkets or Walgreens.

This.
I don't bother with Ponchos although I got absolutely soaked ($28 in the drying machine and I was still damp) on the Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges, so maybe pack a cheap one just for that, the rest are fine, if it rains I just look for a bit of shelter, it doesn't last long.
I was surprised that some of the food in Volcano Bay was nice! I also think it is the best water park.
Edited to add : I didn't find the supermarket branded stuff much cheaper than in Universal, I bought (myself) a Toothless t-shirt in Epic, Wallmart etc didn't have them!

Sorry for the delayed reply, massively grateful for all these suggestions. Yes to the blister plasters, great shout, I tend to carry 2x in my work bag "just in case" but maybe wouldn't have considered that (ironically!) for lots of walking in trainers. Also yes to buying some souvenirs/swag outside the parks.

Really interesting on the fabrics, maybe I'll just pack a mix of cottons and some quicker drying bits so we've got options. And any excuse for a new bum bag!! Thanks everyone
