How do you choose a holiday destination when nothing appeals?

How do you decide on a holiday destination if nothing is jumping out? I’ve probably looked at half the planet, and nothing is getting me excited

@Takoneko You came on and took my idea apart. You and others don’t understand the law about package holidays and £73 a day on hotels for 2 people in Japan is bargain basement and insufferably smug and not realistic for most travellers. Geez.

Takoneko · 18/08/2026 18:57

@MeetMeOnTheCorner You have consistently been patronising and not listened. I have 44 hotel bookings in Japan in the next 8 months, including at a number of hotels on the Audley list. From 5 stars with private onsen on the balcony, to basic three star business hotel chains. I know what hotels in Japan cost and it isn’t unrealistic. You’ve also got your maths wrong.

I’m not responding any more because you only show up on the holidays board to tell everyone else that they are having shit, bargain basement holidays that would not be up to your standards. I come to the holiday board to chat to people about their travels and read about their adventures.

@EllaPepper Thay sounds amazing. When do you find out where you’re actually going?

they sent us a travel pack 4 days before the flight. but we chose not to open it until we got to gatwick. prior to this they shared flight details, a weather report for the area, and some clues to keep us guessing.

That’s so exciting. I normally plan things really extensively, so this sounds like a great way to learn to go with the flow a bit more. I’ll check it out.

OP never came back! @qaliany comment?

We used to be keen on holidays but have now not flown since 2019. I feel happiest at home and can’t be bothered with the whole airport experience. Do you subconsciously feel the same?

MiddleAgedDread · 19/08/2026 10:35

wow, what a bizarre problem to have!! I could literally give you a list of UK short breaks / week trips, European city breaks, fly & flop type places and long haul destinations I'd happily visit depending on the time of year, budget and who I'm travelling with! If you can't even start to narrow it down you either have too much time and money or you should just stay at home.

qali · 19/08/2026 18:17

Is it that bizarre? Like I can very much see and understand the appeal of place, and I am sure I would enjoy them once there. But lots of places just seem a bit “meh” for the amount of money they’d cost.

When I get like this I say to myself every holiday doesn’t have to tick every box and other parts of the world aren’t going anywhere so I can go somewhere different next time and to to this place this time.

I also ask myself the question if a friend said they are going to xxx would I feel a bit jealous and wish I was going? If the answer is yes then I book xxx.

It sounds as if you’ve over researched.

What do you like to do? What excites you? That's the place to start from, is it nature, beaches, architecture, art/galleries/museums, history, swimming, food, sports, adventure, do you love sailing or bike riding. Start with the kind of things you like then search for places that are good for those things or offer a different experience of them.

So many people wanting to know the world, and God gives money and stable working conditions (not everyone can take holidays) to people who don't appreciate it...

I recognise this poster’s style from when they had a different username. This isn’t the first time that they’ve described my mid budget Japan holidays as “bargain basement”. 😂😂

So do I 😂😂
