The weather is so unpredictable at the moment. Looking for mid-high 20s, max low 30s and sunny, which is perfect for us. Hot enough to lie by a pool, cool enough to still do activities/ excursions.

Previous summer holidays we've had:

  • Brittany too cool
  • South France perfect one year, but actually cloudy currently and only about 24c (which is great for them after all the heatwaves, but selfishly not great for us).
  • Alps one year - perfect some days, but quite a lot of cloud and thunderstorms on others
  • South Coast UK - can be gorgeous but we had a rainy week earlier this year
  • Sweden - gorgeous and hot one trip, but grey and quite cool another.

We're stuck with school holidays for a while yet, so where in August has our 'perfect' weather??

Have had this weather in Vancouver but appreciate it's not your typical lay by the beach holiday!

Anothernameretired · 17/08/2026 17:46

Canaries or Madeira are more reliable (not to be too hot!) these days than mainland Europe.

Or the absolute tail end of August/first couple of days of September. I've been lots of places then, not too hot.

This year? Lancashire and Cumbria!Grin
Not the whole of August though. With school age kids, holidays in the UK in areas which have a mix of things to do whatever the weather can be good - my top pick for this is North Wales.

I would love this too, but not convinced it can be guaranteed anywhere. Currently in Menorca and it's been roasting (highs of 37). We had very warm weather in the Hague 2 years ago. We have tried May half term a few times. Had some perfect weather for us (sun, highs of 24 in Crete) and some rubbish weather (lots of rain in Menorca).

I'm considering not booking anything and choosing a destination last minute, but not sure I can bring myself to do that as a) I like to know a plan and b) worried it will be expensive/sold out.

We had two weeks in Denmark - 50% of the time it was 22 to 28 degrees with a fresh breeze. Rest of the time it was quite cold and wet! so it’s a bit unpredictable.

hellospring26 · 17/08/2026 18:05

Hawaii- long way and expensive though!

we go to Ibiza a lot. Yes, it’s hot but it’s generally beeezy and doesn’t feel as hot as it says

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/08/2026 18:14

We’re in the vendee, France. When it was super hot last week it was 36 but easily 10 degrees cooler on the beach. The last few days it’s been a lovely 24/26 ish and right now I’m enjoying the evening sun by the pool. We realised very quickly when it was 36 last week that we do not want to holiday anywhere that’s the norm, it was just too stifling for us.

Jacobolordy · 17/08/2026 18:16

Thanks all. It's just so hit and miss. Where we are now was 38 2 weeks ago which would be too hot for us, but we seem to have hit a cooler week.

We had a 'perfect for us' week in May half term in croatia a few years ago, but friends went the year before and had awful wet weather...

Madeira sounds interesting. I wondered about the Azores next year but looks quite expensive. Holidays are so expensive now, it seems such a lot to spend on weather making them hit or miss...

Interesting - we're further south and its nice and warm but lots of cloud

We went to Madeira (mid July not August but still summer) and it was about 25 degrees. Lots of choice of affordable hotels around Funchal. We really liked it. It felt clean and safe and not unbearably hot although it can feel a bit humid at times. Fabulous trips into the mountains are widely available where it’s cooler. We enjoyed swimming in the natural lava pools in the north.

mynameiscalypso · 17/08/2026 18:49

We have just come back from Provence. We were always told that the weather changed on the 15 August and that’s certainly been our experience. The first two weeks is generally very hot and then it starts clouding over a bit around the 15th and getting cooler.

Generally I would agree with this, but DH and I went to Tenerife two or three years ago, usually reliable in the summer holidays, and it was hellishly hot, humid and dusty, so much so that we didn't want to do anything. I am slowly coming to the conclusion it's the luck of the draw pretty much throughout Europe. (I say this as someone who owns a property in southern Spain (no chance in summer) and consulted the maps with a view to buying a small second bolthole elsewhere). I don't know what the answer is. 🤷‍♀️

GoingToEgypt · 17/08/2026 19:15

My experience is that the last two weeks of August are rainy and a bit cooler both in the UK and mainland Europe and you can almost set your clock by it. A bit of a relief given the heatwaves but I think in a normal year it can be disappointing. We plan our holidays accordingly.

Cheers up again first week of Sept.

hoomhom · 17/08/2026 22:07

Galicia? Haven't been, but have heard people say the weather is perfect. Otherwise, I'd always go for mountains (French Alps or Pyrénées for us), where you can drive downhill on cooler days or uphill on hotter days. Slovenia was also brilliant for us a couple of years ago - hot enough for lake swimming, not too hot for hiking.

Mimmi22 · 17/08/2026 22:30

We were in Portugal (nice bit of the Algarve) at the end of July/early August and it was about 27-32 degrees the week we were there. Hot enough for pool and beach, but with a breeze, and manageable to walk around with small children. Not the heatwave style hot I was worried about before we went.

Jacobolordy · 18/08/2026 00:14

Interesting idea about last 2 weeks of August changing.

Though the best weather we had was southern France 2 years ago, last 2 weeks August, which was pretty perfect for us.

Maybe we'll go on holiday earlier next year! Just seems so unpredictable from answers though...

Can you go earlier? I found mid August is changing a lot weather wise.

We went to the Spanish Atlantic coast one year though for the last two weeks in August, still hot but pleasant like high twenties instead of roasting mid thirties.

Portugal should also be a bit cooler due to the sea breeze.

But - after the last couple of years it shows that the usual logic is not applying anymore. You can have heatwaves or downpours and everything inbetween.

We are off to Lake Garda next week, the prediction is still mid to hight twenties but because it's towards the Alps you have the chance of changing weather. But for us it's a week relaxing after 4 days sightseeing in Florence, I don't need perfect beach weather.

TeamGeriatric · 18/08/2026 11:41

We haven't been this year, but Porto is the answer you are seeking. Admittedly it was 34 yesterday, and was also above 30 on 27th July, you do get the odd really hot day, but otherwise it typically sits around 24/25 degrees and it's very pleasant. San Sebastian/Basque country in Northern Spain has similar climate, a few degrees warmer but significantly cooler than the med coast of Spain.

Agree. That's why resorts are often cheaper

Johnogroats · 18/08/2026 11:44

Just back from the Alps. First week Aug was perfect weather, but hot. Second week warm but cloudy in the afternoons with some storms. I’m wedded to the mountains but think that July is generally a bit better than August.

MistyMountainTop · 18/08/2026 12:06

Croatia the 2nd week in May was cool for us, cooler than the UK! This August - Tenby 😂

Holidayaddict · 18/08/2026 21:51

Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife. Lovely place with lovely weather, mainly mid/late 20s. The north of the island is considerably cooler than the south and much nicer imo.
