Where can I go that is warm but no mosquitoes?

i love the idea of wafting around in a light, airy halter-neck dress on holiday, and have the wardrobe for it.

but increasingly, if I go out in the evening in the UK where I live I am eaten alive so wear long sleeve tops and trousers , which feels very dull I don’t want to do it on holiday!!

the only “safe” places I’ve been recently were Oman , and Turkey but right on the sea. Cruises tend to work well though

Italy seems to be a mozzie nightmare during the day as well as the evenings now according to other threads.

where is good?

(I’m booked for Japan next year and hoping for the best)

I don't think I've ever not been bitten when going on holiday, UK or abroad. Canada was the worst, they managed to get you through clothing! My husband on the other hand, rarely gets bitten.

In the US, planes would spray deet overnight. Wonder when Europe will start spraying?

Do t go anywhere near to rivers or canals. They are worse in close proximity to fresh water as that is there breeding grounds. The coast is good because they don't like salt water.

Teenagerantruns · 18/08/2026 10:14

Definaltly the canaries, also l was in malaga last year not one bite, not much fresh water sorces lsuppose.

hellospring26 · 18/08/2026 10:19

Never been bitten in Ibiza and I am a mosquito magnet, go pretty much every year now. I grew up in Oman and my god the bites if it rains!

SpangledCheese · 18/08/2026 10:20

I’ve never had issues in the Greek islands, I have more issues at home!

FlyingScared · 18/08/2026 10:20

Hope Madrid is mozzy free. I don't need more anxiety!

The USA, aerial sprays are done because of diseases like West Nile and EEE, and even where there have been deadly outbreaks the spraying is still controversial because of worries about indiscriminately killing other insects as well, like bees.

I doubt we will see Europe aerial spraying for mosquitoes unless there are deadly mosquito-borne disease outbreaks, and even then there will be other methods used first like genetic controls - like they use for dengue fever mosquitoes.

When I was growing up (not in Europe!) the mosquitoes could give you chikungunya fever among other nasties - there were public health adverts to fight mosquito breeding called "fight the bite" and we were sent out as kids to get rid of any standing water we could find in the garden. We always knew to cover up and stuff our trousers in our socks if we had to go out in the garden at dusk when they would really start biting. That being said, our houses were fully mosquito-ready - screens on all windows, windows closed and air con on in the evening, etc. and even then you'd often just get one in your bedroom while you were sleeping and you just had to turn all the lights on and hunt it down before you could go to sleep.

Winter/Christmas time abroad is mossie free for me. Summer is (well this year) indoors at home with the blackout blind down and the fan on.

If I do venture abroad in mossie season it's Jungle Formula on in the evenings (never bitten during the day for some reason), and the hot spoon method to kill the itch if the blighters get through the Jungle Formula. They are wily fkers.

Mozzies LOVE me ! I found a cream in India many years ago called Odomos that they sold for about £1. Applied legs, arms, neck, toes everywhere and you do not get bit. Amazon and other UK shops now sell it - think its about £8 for a couple of tubes but it is a god send and I have used it in India, Thailand, Mexico, Italy, Turkey and Greece.

I second this, got eaten alive in India with superstrength DEET spray, bought some Odomos and didn't have another bite the whole time I was there. Use it all the time now and never get bitten. Much more pleasant to use than DEET spray as well.

Never had mosquito problems in the Canary Islands, and they do love me usually.

Also California but that is quite far!

TheOtterly · 19/08/2026 16:02

Agree with @earlyshirley
Avoid insect repellent that's labelled "natural" or "gentle" it won't work.

.I have never been bitten anywhere in the Canaries before, probably a combination of wind, dry and no standing water. They had an exceptionally wet winter last year and there were loads of mozzies in Lanzarote which is very unusual.

Worst places I've been are Greece and Cyprus.

If I'm looking at any destination I look on Google maps for rivers or lakes near the coast and cross those off my list.
Generally mozzies are worse as the summer progresses.

If you go out on an evening, obviously spray your exposed skin but don't do what I did last year and sit at a table with underneath lighting.

We went to agadir in Morocco- no
mosquitos there

summater · 19/08/2026 16:34

I was also going to say the Canary Islands. Worst for me was Greece and the Islands

hahabahbag · 19/08/2026 16:56

Just avoid Northern Europe, they seem to just love Sweden and Finland!

hannahm · 19/08/2026 18:07

Hoi An Vietnam. Not a single bite. First day back in the UK - three.

I got the worst bites of my life in Florence.

Turned out to be bed bugs 😫

Oh Lord I live in fear of bed bugs. The bites can apparently be horrendous , and they are so hard to eradicate. Did you manage not to bring them home ? Must have ruined your holiday.

Fluffypuppy1 · Yesterday 15:43

Bermuda. Was there nearly two weeks and not a single bite. Only a 5 hour flight from the UK too.

The local authorities check residents’ gardens and fine them if they have any standing water so no mosquitoes.

whirlyhead · Yesterday 16:20

I live in Mallorca and we’ve had almost no mosquitos this year as it hasn’t rained since about March. So just head for somewhere dry.

Thanks all, Am mulling ....
