Due to fly to Cyprus in 3 weeks time with DH, two DD and eldest’s boyfriend (all early 20’s) Looking forward to a relaxing break after a tricky year…
Last Friday DH fell and fractured his hip and advised not to fly and is toe touch weight bearing only for 6 weeks. Doing
well with crutches on the flat and stairs.
Still really want to get away so looking for options, would appreciate any suggestions.
ideas so far:
France by train-any destination/hotel recommendations appreciated
Norwegian Fjord cruise from Southampton -DH will be limited with excursions but says doesn’t mind
Somewhere in the uk-any recommendations of lovely places to stay appreciated (we live in London)

any other suggestions we haven’t thought of?
TIA

I’d stay at home he needs to fully rest. If not adult only Warner hotels.

I think you'd be mad to attempt this. How well this heals will affect the rest of his life.

Thanks everyone. I think one issue here is that he feels responsible for the rest of the family missing out-as if he fell on purpose!!! I think we’ll leave it for now and see how he feels in a couple of weeks and book a few days in the uk if he feels up to it then

I’d send the 20 somethings on the original holiday and you and DH just stay home. Me and my DH are staying home due to various life shit - a holiday is not mandatory.

My DP is also unable to fly for medical reasons but has greater mobility than your DH does at the moment.

Honestly I get the frustrations but I think you are bonkers to consider a cruise. Ok it's not a sailing boat but there will be periods of instability which could be agony with his current situation.

I would suggest you find a country house/seafront hotel not too far from London with a lift. Get a Seaview room with a balcony.
Margate is really well set up for mobility scooters + you could rent one (or a wheelchair. Eastbourne has long flat esplanade. Whitstable is another option.

Im not well versed on the inland options but others will suggest (warner leisure is a good shout)

Lovely weather, great food, service at his hand, and a nice view. Optional activities for the rest of you. But still within a couple of hours drive of a London hospital if you need it.

Cruises are good for ppl with limited mobility.
I've been on one from Southampton and it was very accessible.

There are lots of ferry options. We’ve done Harwich to Hook of Holland several times (overnight is best). We’ve also done Portsmouth to Caen.

The beauty of Warners is the built in theatres. Entertainment every night. Lots going on during the day too. The food is quite good, but if you can't get into one of the better restaurants the dining hall is big and busy.

Beware, there are two offerings. Old seaside holiday camps and historic houses. They're both fun just be clear which you've chosen!

If he could manage a 3 hour journey by car, and you are willing to stay in this Country, Bainland is a really special place.
Quite luxurious so does feel like a real treat, and you could book one
of their signature Lodges for a real indulgence. The onsite spa and pool are fabulous as is the restaurant and bar.

I’d do a cruise with a balcony cabin. It’s easy to get around without using stairs and plenty he can see/enjoy from the ship. Once you’re on, you’re on. I can’t imagine train travel being much fun as it can be very cramped, plus there’s getting on and off trains with luggage.

Invest in his recovery, proper rest and private physio. You can go on holiday when he has recovered. Meanwhile, the rest of you can go away. Can someone be on call or stay with your DH to help? Otherwise, pay for the DCs to go away now.

I'd be very worried about the risk of blood clots undertaking any long periods of travel, and he won't enjoy it if he is barely mobile.

I would try and find something nice in Norfolk by the coast, and preferably on one level. We went a few years ago and loved it.

I echo this. The dvt risk will be much higher for several weeks after the fracture due not just to the immobility but the healing process will make him more prone to clots. I'd think seriously about going anywhere further than a couple of hours away.
