Off to Venice in September and we've never been before. We haven't booked yet. Going with friends. Thinking 4 nights.

top tips please?

We mainly just walked around, which I love as around every corner is a beautiful scene. We found a local flea market in a beautiful crumbly building that way, and just lots of beautiful buildings and churches. Wear trainers. At night it’s so atmospheric. I wish I’d done at least one guided walking tour though and will when I go back.

We got the boat to Burano one day, which is very pretty and photogenic and the restaurants good and not wildly expensive, although as a PP said, there’s lots to see in Venice. In hindsight I would have saved that for a second trip as it’s a long boat trip so took up most of the day. (You can get a train to Verona to see another beautiful city, takes about one hour apparently).

The bars selling nibbles and Aperol spritz are everywhere and a good alternative to eating every meal in a restaurant. We stayed in San Polo, which is quieter than San Marco and very nice.

I think Venice is nicer the colder it gets, tbh.

Check for regular days once a week when museums are all free - this used to be Mon or Tues - and maybe consider planning around that.

The last time I went we did a really fun rowing lesson with these ladies - would recommend: https://rowvenice.org/

Row Like a Venetian in your bella batelina with Row Venice!

Get off the beaten path and onto the canals as you row your own batelina, Venetian style with this non-profit of passionate women athletes and expert vogatrici. Remember, you can't know Venice if you don't row Venice!
