Holiday - miss 3 days

FlopsyMopsyCotton · 08/08/2026 09:30

School starts on the 9th. We have found a holiday 6th - 13th meaning dc will miss the first 3 days of school.

I dont know what to do? Child is 7, and can be unsettled after the holidays anyway.

Do you think it really matters that much?

is anyone else doing the same?

I think it does matter at the very start of a new year, especially if the child finds transitions and/or friendships difficult. The first few days of the new school year are all about getting to grips with new routines, establishing expectations, getting to know new staff or classmates, starting new topics etc….
I wouldn’t be bothered if it were the end of term.

No, I wouldn't miss the first three days if avoidable with a confident child, and definitely not with a child who struggles.

No the first three days are the most important of the year imo (teacher for 25 years). This is when the children are learning the expectations for their new class - everything from where things are kept, routines for lunch, break even getting your books out, how they will be expected to respond to different signals by the teacher etc that’s all aside from the learning! If your child is already anxious, having to walk back in once everyone knows all this will be really hard x if you are going to do it aim for end of term.

Couple of days at the end of term is one thing, missing the beginning is another. That first week will be a getting to know each other and setting expectations for the year ahead. I would really avoid missing it if you could

Rufusisturnedon · 08/08/2026 09:43

No way not for a start of new school year. Go in October instead

Pedant61 · 08/08/2026 09:51

Of course it matters. You've had 6 weeks to go on holiday, but you are telling your child (effectively) that school doesn't matter if you do this.
They need to be in school from Day 1 of the term.

Agree with pps. Plus, friendships will be re-established in those days and after a break/if new children start, dynamics can change considerably.

The first week back is really important & I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the holiday knowing they we’re missing so much.

chedderland · 08/08/2026 10:04

Yes it matters.

TheCurious0range · 08/08/2026 10:05

Last 3 days of the year I would, first 3 days no way

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/08/2026 10:13

I wouldn’t miss the beginning of the year. It’s important socially.
a few days at the end of the year or tagged on to one of the shorter holidays though, no problem

AlohaRose · 08/08/2026 10:24

You have a child who already struggled with going back to school and you think it’s going to improve matters by having them miss the beginning of term?! Also returning on the 13th is a Sunday so if you get back late or there are any problems with transportation Monday is written off as well.

Bobbie12345678 · 08/08/2026 10:33

No way. The first three days really matter.

budgiegirl · 08/08/2026 10:40

No, I wouldn't, and I say that as someone who sometimes took their children out of school for a few days. The first few days of a new school year are some of the most important, as they learn new routines, sit at new tables, get used to a new teacher, and see their classmates after the long summer holidays.

Likeiloveyou · 08/08/2026 10:43

No, I would miss the last three days but never the first three.

Dublassie · 08/08/2026 18:09

I am a teacher and very chilled about these things but in your case I would say not to , as you say your child might find it tricky.
It's not worth it at all.
Took mine skiing for a week every year , even during exam years , but the first few days of the primary year are really important from an organisational and a social/emotional perspective.
