Wildfires in SW France

We're due to go to SW France next week but wondering if we should try and change. Is anyone out there currently near Biscarrosse and knows what it's like?

The campsite is due to re-open this week and is apparently fully functional, so we aren't covered by insurance to cancel (no official advice not to travel there).

My concerns are:

  • risk of new/ re-igniting fires
  • poor air quality
  • feel bad bring a tourist in an affected region (although I know locals still probably want business)
  • local amenities/ forests/ activities may be closed?

We have been offered a chance to move to an alternative campsite, but that's tricky as it means either a lot more driving, going to the med which I wanted to avoid, or staying in a campsite that's not as nice/ still in a high risk area.

We're a couple of hundred km east so not local, but from French MSM etc reports recently a lot of campsites look normal and reopened a couple days back to lots of applause and relief.

Haven't heard any recent grumbles about air quality and there has been some measurable rain in the area in the last few days.

Hopefully a genuine local will be along shortly with info from on the spot.

We live 2 hours north of Bordeaux. We haven't had smoke in the air for a week and yesterday we had thunder and rain. I believe the fires whilst just smouldering at present could flare up although the temperatures have dropped a bit.
Also the food supply chain has been disrupted, our supermarket shelves had very little meat on Saturday
I think in your situation I would travel but have a back up plan.

Thanks for the info. Sounds encouraging, but tricky to know how might be affected. I hadn't even thought about food shortages though!

The satellite pic shows a big black blob over where we're going but not sure if that is smoke/ burnt/ old image...

Anyone close to there at the moment??

There was a thread last week started by a woman on holiday who had to leave due to the fires, she went elsewhere for the rest of the holiday and went back at the end to return the holiday house keys, she might be able to tell you which areas were not affected if there aren’t any locals here?

Unless/until someone really on the spot pops up one option for getting some info (though maybe time consuming) might be to keep an eye on the local media...

For example:
