Gluten free in Portugal

We'll be staying in Cascais with a couple of day trips, probably Sintra and Lisbon. Mostly self-catering and planning to eat out once a day. Not coeliac, intolerant. Needs to eat non-gluten ingredients but can cope with cross-contamination.

Any tips?

Dd is strictly gluten free and vegetarian, can’t have any cross contamination. She’s spent a lot of time in Portugal inc Lisbon and has always been fine. Even got gf pastel de natas from a bakery in Lisbon. She’s been to sintra as well.

She also has an app on her phone for gluten free travel which recommends restaurants. I don’t know the name of it sorry.

I love Cascais, Sintra is beautiful and Lisbon is a fantastic city I am envious of your trip. I went when I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes and everyone was so kind and helpful. The piri piri chicken and rice will be naturally gluten free. I'm sure if you explain most places will be able to guide you to something suitable. Randomly we had a fantastic Indian meal in Cascais.
Sém gluten is gluten free in Portuguese

I’m veggie and Coeliac and had no issues in Portugal. Especially in the city (Lisbon) or more surf-y boho places where there were GF options aplenty. One of my better places to visit!

I live in the Algarve and it is similar to Cascais in this respect. Don't think you will have any problem finding restaurants that will understand and cater for your needs. Also all decent sized supermarkets will have gluten free options. In coastal resorts nearly all the Portuguese people you will come in to contact with, will have a very good level of English so things won't get lost in translation.
Hope you have a great holiday, Cascais is a really lovely place.

Continente and Pingo Doce both have gluten free sections, Lidl doesn't (my local one doesn't anyway).

We found lots of gluten free options in Lisbon.

@JulietteHasAGun could you please ask your dd? GF pastel de natas!
