Montenegro Tips and Recommendations

We are off to Montenegro soon and I just wanted to ask the hive mind if there’s anything you think I may not have thought of.

We will be staying in the Tivat area and already plan to get buses (or taxis if necessary) to Kotor and Perast. Plan to walk along to Dobrota from Kotor one day. We have a day trip booked on the ferry to Dubrovnik.

We are self catering so it would be handy to know what the supermarket options are and how much meals out may cost for a family of four.

I fancy a trip to Lake Skadar but hadn’t realised it’s about 2.5 hours away and it’s going to be 35’C so don’t think the kids will be keen.

I may send the older teen up to the coaster on the Kotor cable car with their Dad!

I've checked back and when we used Red Taxi Kotor we just sent them a message a few minutes before we wanted to be picked up, they replied and were reliable. So not pre-booking, but it worked.

Thanks, it is indeed Red Taxi I was thinking of. The worry is that I call them at 7am and they can’t help and we miss the ferry…but I assume the hotel could find someone at that point, even if pricier.

I assume we can pay cash on the buses? People keep linking to a ticket site but they charge an extra fee and you apparently have to print the tickets. I can see it’s 20E for four to go from Tivat to Kotor and assume the bus drivers don’t inflate prices?

We only used the bus twice - to and from Sveti Stefan. The advertised bus fare was the bus fare! I think we paid 2 euros each from Budva. We didn't experience any tourist pricing/gouging that we were aware of, nothing was extortionate.

Worth checking the price of a taxi Tivat to Kotor for 4 of you. When we landed it was mid afternoon and we were stuck in traffic through the tunnel on the way to Kotor. The taxi cost around €25 even with the extended journey time.

My son and his girlfriend queued two hours recently for the coaster. It was beautiful up there but extremely busy!

But just use a taxi app and book a taxi? You don’t have to call them.
