Italy, Greece or Cape Verde 2027. Help!

We've been going back and forth about holiday destinations and we cannot agree! Please help.
The last 2 holidays have been my Husbands choice of destination and hotel. I would love to go to either Italy or possibly Greece but with a small family hotel not a huge AI thing.
My husband is constantly sending me links to hotels in areas that just don't appeal to me. He is now gibbering on about Cape Verde which I don't fancy at all, maybe because I haven't read up on it.
I would love somewhere with traditional character, where we can sample good foods etc and some sightseeing without being over commercialised.
Apparently it is 100% my choice this time 😂
Where would you recommend for me, (not DH) x

Skiathos is simply stunning!

I would avoid CV!

Went to Cape Verde in January- never again. It was like something out of Mad Max, dusty expanses with half-finished buildings dotted about. Very limited choice in supermarkets and restaurants, a nursery bay (?) of sharks just down the coast - ‘only lemon sharks’ apparently.
We weren’t in an AI resort, but the reports of fatalities emerged just after we got back; it seems fruit and veg get washed in irrigation water and that’s how the Shigella comes about.
No hospital and apparently one woman who died slipped on a wet floor and broke her femur; by the time the transfer to Tenerife was organised the crucial timescale to operate had passed - just awful.

Good god thats a horrific story @Agoddessonamountaintop 😳

We have booked for Zante, 7 days and its a small family hotel with 40 rooms. The reviews are fabulous as is the tavernas nearby and the beach restaurant. Thank you for all the suggestions, I have a feeling I will love Greece and go back.

I can thoroughly recommend the Ionian Islands. They are just stunning- the sea is like a bath and scenery just stunning. Kefalonia is beautiful and really quite untouched if you like the more authentic Greek experience.

What hotel have you gone for @NippyNinjaCrab?

Where have you holidayed when your DH deciding?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 05/09/2026 11:11

@NippyNinjaCrab Didn’t you want to see any famous sights or museums? One tourist island is not really Greece.

boobies1234 · 05/09/2026 11:16

Currently in Greece on the island of Corfu, love it here. Plently of little out of the way villages but Corfu town is also massive.
Been to Sorento and would 100% go back. beautiful islands reached by boat, loads of history nearby and good transport.

Any1ForTennis · 05/09/2026 11:20

Personally I would avoid Cape Verde, apart from the well documented food poisoning risk, there isn't really anything there so could be any beach destination in the world if all you're doing is sitting in the sun.

Italy can be hit or miss, you might have a great hotel or end up in a dive. Just my experience but its not to the same standard as other European destinations in a similar price point.

I love Greece and it would always be my first choice of those 3 but would avoid peak season as it's ridiculously hot.

NippyNinjaCrab · 05/09/2026 12:20

@MeetMeOnTheCorner not for this break. It's not for exploring this time, hopefully next year will be better and we can plan 2 weeks and hire a car too.

Ex travel agent here. Not Cape Verde. Way too many issues that they aren’t able to resolve. It’s one of the top 2 most complained about destinations where I used to work

HambleTheDoll · 06/09/2026 17:43

Just seen your update. Good choice. Can’t go wrong with a Greek island in June really

Londonmummy66 · 06/09/2026 17:50

This is a lovely hotel on the outskirts of Siena - 20 minute walk to the walls or a quick hop on one of the multiple buses that stop outside. Easy to get out to the rest of Tuscany by car train or bus. Not too big and has a lovely pool and a terrace with the dreamiest views over the old town https://www.marriott.com/en-gb/hotels/flrsv-villa-ermellina-siena-a-tribute-portfolio-hotel/overview/

Fizzink38 · 06/09/2026 18:03

I was going to say Greece before I saw your update - you are going to have an amazing time! I LOVED Zante and would definitely go back. It's got a bit of a 'party island' reputation but that's just a tiny bit of the island. The beaches are fabulous (of course) and there are loads of lovely, characterful family run hotels. Yours looks fab and I'm so jealous!

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/09/2026 18:04

Go to Paxos ❤️

What is the other one, out of interest? Egypt?

Cheesemonster45 · 06/09/2026 18:24

Zante is great. Had a brilliant time there. Enjoy!

Casualuser · 06/09/2026 18:32

Yes whats the other one.
There is suppost to be a hotter heatwave next year. Can you go away earlier in the year.

@Any1ForTennis "Italy can be hit or miss, you might have a great hotel or end up in a dive. Just my experience but its not to the same standard as other European destinations in a similar price point."

Blimey. Italy is generally highly regarded for food, hospitality, personal safety and just about everything. I've stayed in some very basic pensione as well as high end hotels all over Italy for decades. Yes some hotels are better than others of course, just like anywhere, but you must've been very unlucky to "end up in a dive".

Yes I’m intrigued as to the top place. Egypt?

NippyNinjaCrab · 07/09/2026 07:59

We go in 3 weeks yay, i think the next top would be Tunisia or Egypt. Been to both and won't go back.
