Spending four days in Helsinki in September ahead of heading to another destination. Staying near Old Church Park, close to Esplanadi.

If you’ve been and can share recommendations, they’d be appreciated!

Two adults, happy to do a lot of walking and public transport. It’s our first visit to Helsinki but also our first few days of work ahead of then heading to a pretty activity-focused destination, so particularly interested in recommendations for nice cafes, restaurants, and generally some more sedate options.

Also thinking of a day trip to Tallinn or possibly Porvoo. Also planning to visit Sea Fortress Suomenlinna.

Thanks!

I lived there in my 20s, but it was years ago so I wont give you any names of cafes etc as it will all likely have changed. I came here to say definitely check out the churches - the main Russian and Protestant cathedrals (the white one in the main square, around the university) are stunning. The steps of the white church are ideally placed for a good sunset view! There is also an underground rock church near to Kamppi metro station which has amazing accoustics if you can go to a performance in it. Also, there is a whole other "world" beneath the streets (roughly in sync with the metro line) which local people primarily use in winter rather than walking above ground. The Finns are also very hot on saunas, most homes (including student accommodation) have one - definitely take some time to understand this aspect of Finnish culture, as you will never look at one in the same way again. There are also lots of beautiful nature walks outside of the city etc but given what you have said about your onward travel, I think you have that covered.

With regards to Tallin, it depends why you want to go. My experience was that most Finns treat it a bit like a duty free day trip, taking suitcases over to fill up. Tallin Old Town itself is pretty, but small and very similar to other Eastern European Old Towns. Likewise Sumolena is a nice place to walk around (it should still be decent weather) but it isn't breathtaking and depends what you want to do/see.

I really really enjoyed my time living there but I dont feel there is that much to "see" ... also, be aware that if you are going in early Sept then the new academic year will have just started at the uni and the buildings are all over the core city where you are staying.

We loved a weekend we had in Helsinki in March this year. V easy city to walk around, doesn’t have loads of must do sites but we really enjoyed Lyoly sauna and cold plunge in the Baltic and Suemonlinna island which is an easy boat ride. Lots of other beautiful islands too. A Finnish friend of mine recommended Seahorse for dinner which was lovely.

There’s an absolutely stunning church carved into the side of a rock

We went for the first time this year and like pp found it really easy to explore just having a wander round on foot.

Sauna wise we went to the Allas pool and then had sundown drinks on their upstairs bar terrace. The Oodi library was also worth a look around and good for some people watching.

And not traditional Finnish but DC were craving pasta and we ended up at a restaurant called La Lasagna - it was absolutely amazing and we still talk about it regularly Grin

Thanks everyone. Loads of really great recommendations there!

We’re very much “walk around and see what you can see” city-breakers and tend to not have more than a vague idea of things we want to see (unless it’s something that’s unmissable and must be booked well in advance). We always cover a lot of ground so never really miss much.

Just really looking forward to the break. Just another two months to wait 😬
