travelling through Italy - train or car?

Hi all - DH and I are hoping to take a 2-3 week holiday round Italy next Spring when dc will be 6 months-ish

I would probably travel with baby from my parents house in Toulouse by train and meet DH Milan (we have friends who live there who we'd stay with for a few days)

Just wodnering if anyone's travelled through Italy by train and if it's cheaper/easy enough to go on an Intrerail pass, or just to book individual tickets, or should we just hire a car? Money being the main object and of course ease of travelling with a baby, we quite like to go where the wind takes us rather than planning too much in advance, hence thinking maybe interrail is the best way forward?

thanks

Only travelled by train in Italy but their main trains are very frequent, cheap and clean.

thanks girls - think train will be cheapest and least scary option (also personally find it a bit mroe fun, just wondering if it will be much more difficult with a baby in tow?)
