LEGOLAND this Friday -27th June - anyone else got an INSET day?

SkirtingBored · 25/06/2008 10:29

I was hoping that few schools would be off as it does seem a bizarre date to have an inset day, so we are booked to go! Is anyone else off school this Friday?

Has anyone been to Legoland on a June Friday? Is it hectic? What would be the highlughts for a 3,5, and 7 year old? How big are the lockers you can leave stuff in? Any handy hints at all?

Ta!

Agree, it does seem an odd day for inset so you might be lucky with the crowds. However, in the past I have found that when I went anywhere like that on a day which was inset for us but not much of the rest of the country, the place was over-run with school trips. Legoland is very popular with schools so it could be a swings and roundabouts situation.

We are going as we also have an inset day.

How big is the three year old - there are lots of rides where the cut off height is 1m and they are very strict.

We like the Viking Quest, the log flume at the entrance, driving school, the dragon (roller coaster). It is obviously expensive to eat so we always take a pile of snacks and water.

Swimming costumes/towel as if it is hot then there is a water fountain for them to run around in.

See you there - ours will be the group of badly behaved 7 year olds accompanied by there long suffering younger brothers

Went in May - absolutely fabulous.

There are a mixture of lockers at the top - bit like swimming bath ones: some small, some bigger. The pound is non-refundable but we took a big picnic, took two lockers to start with and then, used one.

At the driving schools, you'll have to split your DC - there is the small one: 3-5s and the larger one - 6+. Sometimes, the queues can be long. The photos can be quite pricey.

We, usually, get the train down, start with the rides the kids really want to do and work our way back. You cannot do it all in one day.

I'm quite envious - have a ball.

wld recommend hiring double buggy there for the youngr ones - there is a lot of walking and mine love them so we gte round a lot quicker. Cost about £12 i think (pricey but prob worth it!). Do you have 2 adults as sometimes the rides have to have kids accompaned by one

MintChocChippyMinton · 25/06/2008 16:19

Went monday last week and it was very quiet so fingers crossed for you.
I noticed some new lockers by the Duplo play area (behind the shop) which might be handier than the top of the hill. Or sling everything from your buggy.
Get there early if you can (before 10am). Take a picnic.
Take swimsuits.

Look on the website and plan your day a bit - are you taking another adult? If not you need to check minimum height restrictions etc, or your older DC may be left disappointed if they cannot ride unaccompanied while you look after the 3yo.

ChopsTheDuck · 25/06/2008 16:25

it's pretty busy atm with foreign tourists and schools, but still lot better than the weekends. Agree, you will be better with another adult and you may have to do parent swaps as all three will probably need accomanying on a lot of the rides.
I'd take a buggy for the 3yo and then you can dump all your things on that, because you don't really want to be walking all the way back up the hills to the lockers again.
One my 3yos is 1m and can go on nearly everything, one is still jsut under, which is frustrating. Mine adore the shows, so try to plan the walk around to coincide with those.

magic5 · 25/06/2008 18:31

My son is on a sch trip there on friday with his year. So probably be busy with schs.

1066andallthat · 25/06/2008 20:21

Yes, really good advice and do take a change of clothes for everyone - we got very, very wet on the Viking Ride.

SkirtingBoard · 25/06/2008 21:02

Thanks for the tips .

Can you tell me where the hill is? Are you are the top at the entrance or the bottom?

Can you take your own photos on the driving school?

Can you do all the 'wet' rides in one go, and then change clothes, or are they all spread out?

Ta!

ChippyMinton · 25/06/2008 22:18

Entrance is at the top of the hill. Main park is at the bottom (get the little train back up!)

Yes to own photos at driving school. Driving licences with photos are about a fiver, but you are given a blank card one - you could attach your own photo later.

Wet rides :
for Viking Falls turn right at the top of the hill;
pirate falls is at the bottom of the park to the right, quite near the viking stuff.
wet n wild rubber boats finish near the duplo fountains play area.
And the wave rider is through lego city. If you get wet on that you could sit in the splash zone for the Johnny Thunder Show or vice versa.

Oh and you will get squirted on the big green train if you sit on the left side

ChopsTheDuck · 26/06/2008 08:24

There is quite a bit spread out, but you don't get really really wet on any of it, not like at big theme parks. If it's a sunny day you will be fine. There are big family stand in driers which I think are £2 to use, but they are pretty crap tbh.

I think the best way to do it is to go into the park and turn left, avoid the hill train and walk down. Work you way through the duplo bit and get to the driving and boating schools before the queues get too big.

I go 2/3 times a week.

ChippyMinton · 26/06/2008 12:53

Chops have you ever gone without children in tow? I'm seriously tempted

ChopsTheDuck · 26/06/2008 16:06

lol, noooo! I'd maybe consider it if it was like thorpe park or somewhere. Lego is too child orientated and I'd feel a numpty on my own! Have seen couples going round minus kids tho. Do you have season pass too?

ChippyMinton · 27/06/2008 10:18

merlin pass, so i could do thorpe or chessington. I'm a scaredy cat though - the pirate falls scares me enough!

ChasingSquirrels · 27/06/2008 10:31

so - am I mad to consider going on the first Wed in August?
We got annual passes (with tesco) when we took ds1 for his birthday last Sep (on the basis that the inlaws live nearby and we could pop in for a few hours on the way home occasionally), unfortunately H left in March so not had the opportunity.
I am having to take that day off to cover childcare as CM is away and am considering it.

ChippyMinton · 27/06/2008 11:51

CS you need to be there early and make a mad dash for your favourite rides. But as you have annual pass it doesn't matter so much as you can return another day.

FruitfulOfFruit · 27/06/2008 12:05

Skirting, we went last Friday (20th) with 3&5yo. And a 6mo. It wasn't too busy. Only one school trip. Bigger qs on the rides aimed at small kids.

We followed advice and headed straight for the bottom to the driving school.

3yo was not impressed by the driving school - he couldnt press the pedal hard enough to keep it moving. And the boating school wasn't worth the sillily long queue.

I would wander round and go on anything with small q, basically.

Take a packed lunch, eat at 12 while watching the show on the lake.

Take changes of clothes for everyone. This proves handy when your 3yo throws up on your dh halfway round the ferris wheel ...

ChasingSquirrels · 27/06/2008 12:26

Thanks Chippy - it does matter really as its a 2hr drive from us (only 30 mins from ex-inlaws, but I won't be going there again) and the passes run out at the end of September, so the day in Aug, and maybe his birthday weekend will be the only times we will use them. I agree on getting there early. Thanks.

1066andallthat · 27/06/2008 13:04

CS go as many times as you can - pack them in the car early/take them home late. Have a legoland summer .

Have been (years ago) in high summer - yes, the queues were long, but then, they stayed open later. They actually announced this during the day. The weather was better so getting wet didn't matter as much.
