Holiday books

Three weeks until our holiday, and it's time for one of my most important pieces of prep - downloading books to my kindle!

Can anyone recommend anything they've enjoyed reading recently? There are some long flights and drives so I want to be ready!

I love anything by Charlotte Mcconaghy!

I like to find books that have a connection to where I'm going, either set there or perhaps a central character hails from there. Maybe even a translated version of a book from there.
Luckily, I had an e-book about China rather than a physical book , as Jung Chang is banned there !

Anything by Kate Atkinson, Maggie O'farrell, Kate Morton, Nicci French, Denise Mina.
I love all of these authors.

That would be the ideal! I'm going to Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa, if anyone has any suggestions about books that are linked? So far I've only found quite heavy themed options and I was hoping for something a bit lighter.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Definitely not light but ‘Don’t let’s go to the dogs tonight ‘ is set in Zimbabwe .

Marian Keyes Walsh sister series.
Dawn O Porter also has some great books, Cows is my favourite.

That sounds similar to a tour we did a few years ago !
Victoria Falls, Chobe & Cape Town?

Alexander McCall Smith lived for a while in Botswana, & wrote a lovely series of novels "The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency".

Wikipedia sums it up (saves me doing it). They're very entertaining stories, with the characters' lives unfolding, so really best to start with the first.
He obviously has a great affection for the country, & his use of language is superb.
The main character, Precious Ramotswe, is described as "traditionally built"; so much nicer than "fat".

Admittedly a totally different part of Africa, but "My sister, the serial killer" by Oyinkan Braithwaite is very funny and well-written. It's set in Nigeria. Don't be put off by the title.

One of Paul Theroux's travel books is about Africa.

If you can get past the racism, King Solomon's Mines is a cracking read.

Anything by Barbara Pym.

The Man With a Seagull on His Head.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 29/06/2026 19:13

Have you read The Poisonwood Bible?

Lunaballoon · 29/06/2026 19:21

No African connection but The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett. I’m reading it at the moment and thoroughly enjoying!

Stompythedinosaur · 01/07/2026 12:22

Thank you so much everyone, I'm going to look through these suggestions! Much appreciated!

If you haven't read it yet, I'd recommend Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.It kept me hooked the whole way through and is perfect for long flights. Hope you have an amazing holiday

@Lunaballoon

I am listening to the calamity club on audiobook. Enjoying but so long! I’m at episode 23 of 50. Any idea whether this means coming up to half way or (as I’m hoping !) the remaining chapters are a much shorter length and actually I’m closer to the end than not even half way!

If murders are your thing I just read Kill your Darlings by Peter Swanson which has one of the cleverest plots I've ever read. Very well written too.

I remember just before one holiday discovering one of my favourite childrens books ( Alison Uttley - the Country Child) had a sequel! What a blissful holiday that became.
