Solo mum holiday August - help!! Going round in circles

I want to take my tween son away in August for between 3 and 7 days. I know I’ve left it late but I can’t bloody decide where to go. I’ve been looking for months.

Anyone care to share their absolute best (affordable) holiday with a boy of this age, keeping in mind it will just be me and him and he will need 1-2 interesting things to do each day?

He likes football, food/eating out, pool swimming but not a fan of sea swimming/surfing. He loves interesting sights and places of interest and has plenty of energy for walking and sightseeing.

Open to the UK or abroad.

If hot temps are a concern, you could do worse than Belfast. Huge amount to see there and in the general area, lack of beach not an issue, accessible from northern England.

Actually really keen to visit Ireland. What do you recommend seeing there?

Belfast city has loads to see and do for 2 or 3 days and then you could head up the coast to Portrush for beach.

Its Northern Ireland not Ireland, we are different countries but loads to do up north. I am the other end so Ireland itself or roi as we get called. Again so so much to do, we have fantastic beaches all around the island but again it really does depend what you want to do or see!

For a shorter trip I'd probably stay in NI, 7 full days might give you more time to cross the border too if you fancied seeing Donegal which is stunning. Would you drive over on ferry, fly and hire a car or rely on public transport?

Either way, you must go to the Giants Causeway. There are day trips from city centre Belfast if no car.

For the rest, a lot depends on your transport. Museums- W5 which is a kids science museum and the Ulster Museum plus the botanic garden next to it are both great and central. If you'll have a car you could also drive out to the Folk museum if that's his kind of thing- worth looking it up.

There's the usual tourbus stuff, if he's interested in history you could do a murals taxi tour. The area around the docks has been done up and a tween boy might like the big yellow cranes. I like Armagh Planetarium about an hour from Belfast and the town is pretty. I also keep meaning to go to Derry, but others could advise better there.

Barcelona is amazing but i'm not sure I'd want to go city sightseeing in August?? We went at October half term and it was warm enough then. I think I'd stick to northern Europe for sightseeing over the summer (particularly the way the temperature is going at the moment!).

I agree, we just went for the day but the crowds were horrendous in August. Might be better if you have longer
