Suggestions for an early August family holiday with mild weather

We’re looking to book a week away in early August - somewhere not too hot, ideally low to mid 20s.

Kids aged 7, 12, 14. We usually self cater. We’ve done Stockholm and Copenhagen before and loved both, and have been to Wales for the last couple of years.

Any suggestions?

Iceland?
Billund?
Duinrell?

Scotland! But avoid the west coast due to midges. Aviemore or Pitlochry areas might suit.

or Northumberland if you don't want to drive as far as Scotland. Loads of castles and big sandy beaches, you could do a day trip to Newcastle or stopover for the night in Durham on the way and visit Beamish.....

Isle of Wight? Scilly Isles? Maybe the Channel Islands? My cousin loves Jersey.
We’ve just booked Madeira for mid July, supposed to be around mid twenties.

Ebeltoft in Denmark. 10 minutes from Aarhus Airport (daily Ryanair flights from Stansted) located on a stunning bay. Lots of activities such as windsurfing, SUP, sailing etc. or easy cycling and walks. With a hire car it would be easy to get to Djurs Sommerland theme park (at least as good as Legoland) which is only 20 minutes away, or 90 mins gets you to Billund and Legoland, Lego House and WOW Park.

The town itself is a quaint old town with cobbled streets, old houses and numerous cafes and restaurants, as well as a harbour. The town is on the edge of a national park where there are some beautiful hikes. Aarhus, Denmark's second city, is 30-40 minutes away as is the Rainforest at Randers.

There are hundreds of self-catering summerhouses and apartments in the area and apart from the first week of August, the month is not high season as Scandinavian school holidays are about a month ahead of the UK.

Look north on the map.

The Alps - occasionally can hit high 20s (more likely in July than Aug ime) but more usually low to mid. Lots of activities and beautiful.

Cornwall, Devon, Norfolk, Northumberland. However, you might struggle to book for 2026 as late as this

Co,Kerry?

The Netherlands! Soooo much to do and see!

Iceland is gorgeous and cool.

Every time we have been to the Alps in August it has been around 23 degrees.

Visiblyabove25 · 24/06/2026 14:16

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will get researching!

Iceland is indeed amazing but also eye wateringly expensive and also the only place I’ve been on summer holidays that was actually colder than Scotland 🤣

Havanananana · 24/06/2026 16:47

The Alps are also a good call if an active holiday is what is required, whether it is the French Alps (e.g. around Morzine), the Italian Alps or somewhere like Zell am See or Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria.

This is true and I had to buy a winter coat when I was there 😆. We went when there was a heatwave here and it was so lovely though. Might be too expensive for a family holiday though.

Highly recommend Morzine in the summer - there is loads to do in the area. And we drove there which wasn’t too bad
