Where to go in Japan or China?

I’d go to the democracy that respects human rights.

Both are amazing, Japan is/was easier to travel independently in, can't really go wrong with either. I haven't been to China since 2004, it has some of the most spectacular sites in the world but at that time it was harder to travel unless you spoke mandarin. I am sure English is on the rise though now. I lived in Japan for a while, I love it there and travelled extensively, but it's main tourist sites are temples, China has more variety I think.

I’ve been to both multiple times. What sort of things do you like on a holiday? What are your must-sees? How long are you planning to go? Maybe that can narrow it down. Otherwise, can you fly from one to the other to save on separate flights and see both? We’ve previously done that because flights to Japan via China are usually cheaper anyway.

China is fascinating but I would choose Japan if I had to pick between the two.

What time of the year will you be travelling?

Japan. Clean, safe, easy to get around. Incredible range of things to do and see - temples, palaces, incredible gardens, gorgeous cities, markets, unbelievably beautiful countryside, wild monkeys, hot springs, robot helpers, crazy fashion, great shops, amazing food.

MiniCoopers · 22/06/2026 18:15

Japan every time. They’re polite, their culture is fascinating and they aren’t a communist community

We loved Kyoto - the cherry blossom by the river, buying vintage kimonos and having noodles in the geisha district, the incredible markets, the Golden Pavilion, Fushimi Inari Tori gates walk with the little wooden foxes you write your wishes on, then hang from the trees. Nara with the wooden giants guarding the temples, the deer who bow for rice cakes,

We loved climbing Mount Koya and staying in a Buddhist temple on the top, fire ceremonies, zen gardens, silk futons and kimonos. Loved Arasha where you climb a hill and stand in a cage on top, so the wild baby monekys can come to be fed apples and peanuts then zoom off again.

Loved walking the old samurai route with the medieval teahouses, waterwheels, giant boulders, crystal streams, rice paddies and tiny wooden houses - like studio Ghibli films.

Loved the Ghibli museum too. And Tokyo with its giant robots, amazing sushi at the fish market, fantastic fashion shops.

Loved bathing in the hot springs and walking around sulphur geysers where the black eggs are boiled, the amazing sculpture gardens, the exquisite moss gardens, the Hokusai and Hiroshige galleries.

I’ve only been to China (I went last year) and out of the 66 countries I’ve been to it’s my joint first place, so I’d recommend it. I’d also absolutely love to go Japan.

Japan every time! The people, the food, the scenery and the sights, it’s incredible and so diverse

doihaveacase · 22/06/2026 21:48

We are going to both this summer with our primary age kids. As pp said, flights worked out cheaper this way and hotels in China can be great value. I have travelled quite a bit in both countries and it does depend on your interests, and tolerance for noise/ chaos in the case of China!

Wiennetta · 22/06/2026 22:17

I’ve been to both and it really depends what you’re looking for as they are very different. But both are safe, loads of culture, beautiful scenery. We found China was much friendlier - Japan was polite but we found people very reserved. China is much much cheaper - we basically stayed exclusively in 5 star hotels in major cities, for around £100-150 a night. In Japan, similar level hotels have cost us £500-700 a night. Food is great in both but in different ways. Travel is easy in both if you are travelling the usual tourists routes - both have bullet trains.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 22/06/2026 22:23

China! It's the most amazing place I've ever been.

Start in Shanghai. Bullet train (fabulous) to Beijing. Also Xian for the Terracotta Warriors. Hangzhou for the lake.

Don't believe the Western propaganda. Its a fabulous country and the Chinese love foreigners/tourists. It's a refreshing change from the anti foreigner attitudes in a lot of other countries. English is widely spoken. Never had a problem there.

TheLette · 22/06/2026 22:30

I've been to both and much preferred Japan, especially for a holiday. I found China absolutely fascinating but quite hard work - as a blond, blue eyed woman I was constantly stared at, babies shoved in my arms for photos, touched etc which personally I found very off-putting and overwhelming. But it was fascinating and food was great. I spent 6 weeks travelling all round. Japan was just a hell of a lot easier and also still had beautiful and interesting sights, food etc.
